Hi guys, my name is Tom, I'm 20 and from south wales, I've just joined this site after using it for advice for a few years. My freelander 1 recently has started making a weird rubbing, grinding noise (really hard to explain) abit like a train (ch ch ch ch ch ch ch) sorry for the lack of discription. This only happens when I turn right, and is amplified when driving straight through town or back rounds with trees either side. The car itself isn't driving any different and my dad can't seem to pin point the problem. Can anyone help? I don't mind the cost I just want it sorted. The car has 51k miles and has new discs if that helps.

Duff wheel bearing, CV joint or possibly the VCU has seized.

Thank you very much for your reply Datatek I orginally thought VCU from research but wasn't too sure if they would go with low mileage like mine. But further research says they can go between 50,000 and 70,000 miles. So I rhink I will bite the bullet and do that unless anyone else has any ideas before?

Before spending daft money on a vcu you might not need, remove the prop and drive it. If the noise is still there it will be a wheel bearing or cv joint.

Thanks for everyone's replies and help. I've fixed the problem. The backing plate on the front drivers side was bent and was touching my disc there for when I turnt the car it was rubbing together making this noise. I bent the plate back a little and it no longer is rubbing and I no longer have the noise. A non costly fix, thank God I didn't buy a new VCU haha.
If anyone else gets a ch ch ch ch noise check the backing plates first as I didn't know they could be bent.
