Afternoon all. At the end of this month I will be upgrading from my freelander to a p38 1997 vogue 2.5 auto.

It has been converted to springs which I'm not a huge fan of. The compressor and driver pack are present and just unplugged. I think it has had a decent kit on because I think its had the module added. It says manual eas when you turn it on. Aside air bags is there aanything else I would need to put it all back. It looks like it has plugs for sensors or something near the springs? I believe the compressor is OK. It was damaged air bags I think.

Also it struggles to start when hot. I know this is a common fault with the BMW engine but what actually causes it. I can't seem to find out. I know there are fixes but it just seems like a cover up to me

Cheers. Greg

As for the eas the plugs near the springs sounds like its had the hight sensors removed so they will need replacing along with the air springs
The hot start problem is a very comon problem its caused by the injection pump chain becoming streched slightly and it knocks the timing out you can have it retimed but a much cheeper option is the hot start relay
You say you havent bought it yet? Well thats a good hageling point to get a few ££ knocked off tell them youll have to have in retimed and that will cost mega then buy it and fit the cheep relay:D

Check that you've got an EAS ECU. Simply shorting out two connections on it gives the EAS MANUAL message. Whilst you're there check for the delay relay.

I believe the compressor is OK. It was damaged air bags I think. If you believe that it was damaged airbags then whoever fitted the springs probably knackered the compressor before he got around to it. Not a great problem as long as the motor is O.K.

The consensus is that the chain stretches putting the timing slightly out.

Cheers. Greg

Welcome to the full time hobby that is P38 ownership.

Don't buy it.
It will costa small fortune to refit the EAS system.
The hot start fault can be a stretched chain, but it can also be a knack erred engine!

If you want a p38 then do not buy one that has EAS faults.
There are plenty of good ones for sale, just shop around

+1 to TB...

Never buy a Range Rover with faults unless you fully understand the costs involved in repairing it...

If has been converted to coils, what else has been 'overlooked' or 'skimped' on??

A Range Rover with problems will empty your bank balance rapidly

I have known the car a little while and its a bit of a steal really. He is taking my freelander for part ex. I'm not bothered about leaving on springs tbh. I know it was a 600 quid kit plus labour so it has the proper bypass module in place. There is also another compresser lurking in a shed if it is knackered. So it seems 4 sensors and 4 bags. Not so bad.

Need to find someone who has a functional system that wants to convert to springs ;-)

If all the units are there, it will not cost a lot to put it back on air, £250/£300 for a set of airsprings, sensors if the are not there an overhaul kit for the compressor about £15, the software and cable to clear any faults and away you go.:)

Any idea if they will be handmade sensore or where the best place is to get the sensors? Just so I can have a look?
Hand made sensors????? The sensors are bolted to the chassis rails, one for each corner. download RAVE from Wammers guide in the How To section and it will give you all the locations.

Sorry my phone corrected handed to handmade. I have read that some of them are handed. I understand where they are. I mean where is the best place to look to replace them to get rough prices

I would not bother replacing them until you find out if they are faulty. Island 4 x 4 do them and are usually good on price.
