Picked up my 1983 ex nato landy on Saturday, drove it 220 miles home stopping at services on way home. The landy started fine at services and run well on way home. Did notice a slight rumbling noise when lifting my foot off the throttle and the breaks pulled slightly left when applied. Now at home went to park it up for the night and it wouldn't start it kept spluttering and had black smoke from exhaust. A friend looked at it and opened the air filter spilling oil over the engine, he came up with the answer that we needed new points as they were not opening properly, he set them and the engine started again. (this is still with the old points). Went out just to start it up this morning, started no problem but the smoke was still there, could this be down to the oil spillage on the engine. It is still miss firing a bit too. Can.t understand how we got it home all that way with no prob for this to happen as soon as we stopped and all within a matter of minutes.
 
welcome aboard matey...take the air filter out and see if you loose the black smoke if so clean the filter, hows the fuel consumption?...could also be float or carb adjusment what colour are the spark plug tips?...
 
Could be the air filters been disturbed and oil has poured into the inlet manifold, be carefull this can infact run the engine, and it will run out of control!

I would take the pipe off, check it for oil, and the inlet manifold.

Could be if its been sitting for a while the points were dodgey, they could have smacked themselves into working again.
 
Thanx for replying. On bringing the landy home we reckon we got 18 to 20 mpg at a steady 45 to 50 mph.

The landy was supposed to have been serviced when we picked it up. A couple of the plugs were slightly black. To be honest the guy who looked at it was a bit hash bashing into things he went from telling us we needed a new engine to we needed points or plugs. He won't be near it again......

i wouldn't worry about this unless you have one of the rare petrodeesil rover engines.
you need a good base to start from so either ensure that your ..plug,leads,cap,rotor arm and point are ok or replace them. then clean up yer oil and check the filter has the correct level of oil in it. next set your static timing then you'll be ready to proceed to the next bit.

take the air filter off and try it without one.
check out another coil, these have been known to fail/break down.

as been said, check out out all the obvious stuff like plugs/points/leads etc...

remember the disi cap and the rotor arm too.
 
landy is parked at parents driveway. going down in the morning to try out the suggestions we have had in the forum. Ta for your ideas. Let you know how we get on.
 
Brakes are set up to pull slightly to the left so that if they do lock you don't hit oncoming traffic head on. good luck with the engine.

That takes a bit of believing, so you just mow a load of pedestrians down instead ?!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That was our thoughts too, we couldn.t understand it. Anyway the landy is going to be checked out by a relative who works on 4x4 vehicles so hopefully things will be ok....
 
True the brake lines will deliver slightly more force to the left hand side of the vehicle. Pedestrians are softer.

wot you need to do is fit 750 tyres on the left side and 650's on the right that should make it pull up straight
