Hi,
I'm a new 70 year old fart. Had an ex MOD Series 3 for 27 years, converted it from petrol to diesel about 20 years ago to improve economy (made about 3 MPG difference).
Last 2 years it has sat with its nose in the air in a barn because I had to replace the oil seal on the front transfer box where it connects to the prop shaft. Everything went swimmingly until I tried to replace that fibre washer that is shaped to the splines. Can I get it in? can I by hell. The replacements do not seem to be made from the same material and hence do not compress.
So, the job has been added to the 'roundtoits' to which I haven't yet got. I have to say that getting on my back to do the job isn't too bad but getting back up seems to become harder as the years go by!!
Any advice would be very welcome.

Hello and welcome from me:)
Post your woes in the series section for a better response young man.:)

Welcome from one old fart to another
I'm not into Defenders but you will find plenty of help (& humour) on here :D

Thanks to all for the warm welcome. Should have said HAVE a Series 3. Had an H reg Disco for 19 years and gave it to my cousin to pull her horse trailer but it has sadly since disintegrated as they do. I would quite like a newish Defender but I have to confess that I converted first to a Terrano 2 and then an X-Trail. I regularly haul 2 1/2 tonnes between UK and central France and [so far] they have proved totally reliable. Not enamoured with the shapes of the new LRs, I like a 4WD to look like a 4WD but they are becoming hard to find. The Series 3 takes place next to my Healey 3000 and comes under the wife's category of 'boys toys'. I will do as advised and post my problem on the series section, thanks Flossie.
