I notice with horror that the haynes manual says use new main bearing cap bolts and big end nuts.
is this really necessary?

I've never done it on a 200.

no its not unless obviously damaged,since they are all specialised bolts youd struggle to get as good as quality,but it is a good idea to use studlock on any internal fastening
