Hi all,

Just introducing myself. I imported a 1985 Defender 110 to Austin, Texas from Chambery, France.

Thanks,

Christian

Good morning and welcome sir....

Technically you have a 110.... it became the Defender 110 later in 90's :) I had to look that up I am not an anorak.

The biggest change to the Land Rover came in late 1990, when it became the Land Rover Defender, instead of the Land Rover 90 or 110. This was because in 1989 the company had introduced the Discovery model, requiring the original Land Rover to acquire a name.

Well, thank you for the clarification. I have a Land Rover 110. Unfortunately this morning I was driving and started smelling smoke and saw that my whole electrical loom had melted and short circuited and I was unable to switch the car off. Now I have to replace all my main engine electrical and am having a hard time doing so.

Any pointers on which thread to use for electrical problems?

Ouch.... I would stick it in "https://www.landyzone.co.uk/forum/defender-90-110-130.7/"

Not one I can help with but I am sure others have had similar and can lend a hand..... any idea what caused it ?

Morning Christian. Sorry to hear about your problem, that's a pretty rough introduction to Landy ownership. Welcome to LZ anyway. +1 @ER1C, I'm still relatively new but I'm sure there's an answer here for you.
All the best

Not sure what caused it but the cables were very close to/almost touching the engine block so I assume that the heat of the engine melted the plastic and caused a short circuit that further melted the cables and caused further electrical problems.

Also, after thinking I was an idiot, I figured out why I think it is a Defender other than the fact that it is written on the car, I checked my VIN against the Land Rover VIN description and found:
LD - Defender
H - 110
A - Hard Top
C - 2.5L, inline 4 cylinder, diesel
8 - LT77 5 Speed Manual / Left Hand Drive
B - 1984-86
A - Solihull, United Kingdom
It was like doing 23andMe for my Landy!
