Hi I'm new to this site and land rover ownership... Picked up an 1989 90 as I've always liked them and never had a reason to buy one beyond owning a CJ7 and Cherokees, but now I've got one as as winter knock about... So the engine has started making a really loud knocking noise like someone under the bonnet swinging a hammer - power drops off a little and it sounds terminal - This is forcing my hand - so which is best 200 or 300 tdi? Which is easiest to fit and who should I speak to about recons or exchanges ( kind of exchangish... because mine is the conventionally aspirated 2.5 diesel which really is quite slow although I started to get used to it and enjoyed the new pace of life!) Many thanks for any response. Paul

You will needs to buy s/h. Most recon manufacturers only exchange like for like otherwise they have heafty surcharges. Both 200/300 are good engines

the 200tdi is much simpler and less expensive s/h.
prob easier to find also.

do you really need the extra power of the 300?

What extra power 200/300, both rated the same. A 200tdi from a Disco is probably the cheapest engine to buy ,but because of the position of the turbocharger and exhaust are not a simple drop in proposition complicated further if you also use the Disco gearbox. This is why Defender 200tdi cost more s/h. 300tdi early models have some electronics later more. They are probably the last Land Rover diesel that can be overhauled by a enthusiast. Both types have been put into earlier and different models of Land rover. You will probably need to get the radiator and intercooler the pipes and air filter box.Look through forum for articles about this transplant. Download a workshop maqnual on 200\300 engines. Then work to a plan this way you should avoid most of the pitfalls in doing conversions. Good luck-------BB
