I am about to fit a reconditioned gearbox and transfer box to my Series 3 but I am told that I cannot just slot the overdrive into the new unit and something has to be done before it can be fitted (not just a gasket). Can anyone enlighten me as to what this is please?

Sounds incorrect mate. Once the box is in just take off the rear plate on the transfer box and fit the overdrive in (after taking off the nut etc etc).

I think there is a fitting or cog or something that goes into the transfer box isn't there? It would have been on your old one if you had the OD unit fitted.

Think you remove the plate covering the pto, remove bearing from shaft and refit to overdrive then slide it in and bolt it up. Can be done under the landy

Thanks Gun.
The company I bought the new box from have been very helpful. They think the overdrive is so old its messed up second gear - it jumps out in second under engine braking. I'm taking it back to them so they can have a look at it and possible rebuild. We'll see!
Cheers
