Good Day all,
OK, so my story begins many years ago, My wife always dreamt of owning an old Landy, so i bought a 1966 ex AA Series 2A, petrol Long wheel base with a safari roof.
It had an interesting past but was worse for wear, so i stripped it, and built her back up to a glorious looking example.
So off we went on her maiden voyage, (after i test drove and MOT'd her off course) Wife at the wheel, big smile on her face.. all is good in the world and the brownie points have never been so high :).... unfortunately, the smile was short lived :( "its a bit hard on the steering isnt it" "doesnt it go any faster" "the brakes are a bit poor" "im not that happy with no seat belt" etc etc etc....
So in the end, she loved looking at it, not so much driving it...

So i had endless hours of fun in it, living in the forest of dean at the time was perfect and no matter how hard i tried, and i tried, i couldn't get her stuck... WHAT A MACHINE :) (Pic of the old girl below)

Then we moved, she had to go, sad day but just couldn't keep her.

So back to the title, my wife still undeterred still wanted a land rover.
So, just bought her a cheeky little freelander TD4 on an 04 plate with 90K on the clock

Bought as a scrapper as there was a HUGE noise from engine, but after reading up about them on here, worked it out to be the famous Crankshaft pulley.
So i have changed that and all seems pretty good.
She is still rough at idle :-/ and a bit smokey when cold, will start investigating this shortly..

BUT.... the good news, the wife LOVES it !! all is good..

Anyway, just wanted to thanks to the members of this forum who have already helped me out and i havnt even asked a question yet :)
So Thank you !

Now to sort the idle problem, the leak in the boot, put the propshaft back on :-\ the broken mirrors...ETC ETC ETC ETC ETC
Have a feeling this will become a labour of love...

Cheers
Steve

Thanks.. Well i've read a few times on here people saying write a nice intro, and pictures etc etc, and my Tea was too hot to drink so i rattled on :)
I do have a general question for all actually... on a scale of 1 - 10... how crazy was i to have bought a freelander in the first place haha

Buying a late model frerlander 1 with td4 engine on lowish miles is a wise choice. There's many weld free years left in it which is more than yer usual tratter, disco or RR. It offers good value fer money. It may be 14 years old but look after it and it should be good fer many years motoring int future.

Thanks for the reassurance Hippo :) whilst changing the fuel filter (after i finally found it) i noticed some surface rust in the arches behind the plastic, so cleaned up, anti rust, zinc primer etc followed by some waxoil, worth looking behind all the plastics i think, catch any rust quick! i think it was a sensible choice to buy one, seems OK to work on and not bad underneath at all !

Just got to work out the rough idle now, wife said it really stuttered this morning on the way up the hill.
seems much better when warmed up though, got a few ideas but any advice GRATEFULLY received !!!

Then to getting her back to 4wd.. Viscous seems good, good resistance, just hoping the ird is OK now :-/

Welcome to Landyzone. I have a series and a freelander and I've never regretted it. I'm not a fan of diesels, when they play up, they can be a pig to sort out and expensive. First things I'd check would be timing and valve clearances buts it's more likely to be an injector problem.

If yer start a new fred int Freelander section yer can list yer problems and we'll try and help. Have a look about in there. Some of the popular fixes may solve yer problems.

Thanks Col, im with you... I love the power of the diesel, but always had petrols, and i aint to bad on them... i dont fully understand diesels yet but im learning :)

Yeah im still trying to work out what a tratter and a FFRR is.... 2nd being range rover maybe ??
On happier news, found out from MOT history today that the prop was taken off at 50k, viscous feels good so im very optimistic..... guy i bought it off said one of the mount bearings went (rubber had split) which is why he took it off, and to save fuel and tyre wear..
Will find out on Saturday..
I im hoping that either it works, or it dont snow this winter...

FFRR = Full Fat Range Rover

Tratter is a proper Land-rover ;)

And to not scupper your love for the freelander i won't tell you the landers common nick name ;)
