Get Scanner Danner on the case :D
All main dealers do these days is just systematically replace everything until the light goes out, no real tracing

yeah, I've been following them on youtube, not much chance you'd buy one with the experience they're dealing with - and they're "media"

I think it goes deeper than that. I'll bet the software was outsourced by JLR and no one knows exactly how it works except a contract programmer who has moved on to his next job.

this+1, or even worse, ecu codes written by multiple sub-contractors, the majority of whom write the lowest grade of code known to man [read, don't give a **** as long as their code "works..."]. if code contracted out to Ricardo type Co', they'll sub out. Even with the best test validation process these ECU code sets fail and can take years to de-bug/iron out fail points, especially if/with poor sensor fitting as this will rtn constant duff sensor -to- brain signals resulting in an uncontrolled array of fault codes. If this is happening the JLR stealer technicians have no chance of repairing the faults...the vehicles will simply keep being returned for repair.

Its not just JLR, I first came across this talking with a guy who had spent ages trying to sort a Vauxhall that kept going into safe mode. Turned out to be a duff plug, but Vauxhall flatly refused to accept that a plug could put it in safe mode as it had no sensors or code for that. He stuck with it (he ran a fleet) and Vauhall went back to the contrator who wrote the code. Turned out he used the acceleration on each firing stroke off the crank sensor and linked it to safe mode but no error code as it was his own idea and not in the spec so he never told Vauxhall. Ditto Audi that kept going into safe mode after an exhange gear box, turned out 3rd gear ratio on the new box was slightly different and not in the manual or fault codes was a code line that looked for a drive output / rpm mis-match. They had to get another box.

it's possible. depending what they contracted for they could have only got the compiled version.
They may not have acces to it, some of the ECU programmes are "black boxed" to prevent reverse engineering and copyrighted. I would be more suprised if they had the code as this would show they wrote it. Look at dieselgate, in VW the team writing the codes activly hid what they were doing from managers (or so they claim..), regulators and customers.
No way would "the ECU is cheating the emissions" ever come up on a OBD, in a manual or in accessible code, it was burried deeply and disguised.

Anything is possible. But spoof theories on the web about a massive company like jlr contracting out their software dev and not having knowledge or access to the code? Do you really think jlr is that silly?

Your mixing up the process flow the program follows and the data tags pulled out to view on diagnostics. They pull out tags for items of interest. They don't flag where the program is in its cycle.

Fair point, but look at deiselgate. Those ECUs were black boxed, OK by VW in that case. Do I beleive JLR have all the code? No I do not. Do I believe they write their own code, no I do not. This is not about web theories or conspiracy, its about my expreince of control software and things going wrong. The worst I came across was a well intentioned service tech who had the ablity and knowledge to go in and change code. He did it to help out and do a temp work around, but it got forgotten and the subsequent bang cost £2.5m.
