Hello Guys

As mentioned in a previous post, I have now landed my '89 Classic Range Rover. Bought on e-bay, when I turned up the guy was totally reasonable and even offered no deal if I wasn't happy with it. But it was exactly as described. She has 90k (as of this morning) all MOTs and a shed load of paperwork. Previous owner has done quite a few mods but time meant he couldn't see it through. She is already lifted 2" with HD springs and shocks, dis cones on the rear, cranked trailing arms. My project now begins. She was well within my budget, so I have some cash to put into her.

1. Chassis - I think the chassis is really clean for an '89 (see photo). But she needs a good going over with the wire brush and drill (front end, rods, axle everything) to get rid of all the flakes. I will then pressure wax-oil everything at the front-end (priority) although I'll do the steering rods in chassis yellow.

2. Steering and diff guards ordered - they will go on, chassis yellow again. Not looking forward to getting the bolts off... they look pretty solid, but should be fine with a bit of excessive force.

3. Flared arches - the clearance is too tight on the front arch, and it interferes when bumping about at full lock. Grinder to arches, flared arches fitted.

4. New front winch bumper - existing one is a bit rotten, and doesn't look to great.

5. Bit of noise of the front shaft when a lift off, they are original shafts, so I will take the plunge and fit wide angle front and rear.

6. Boot is pretty clean, but a bit of scrubbing and painting should keep her good. She is getting a mat olive drab all over, with yellow on the undercarriage.

Any comments/thoughts welcome...!

Jock

Looks good, although in pic 3 I would take a close look at the light/battery box, might be salvageable at this stage :5bsmash:

Hows the rest of it for rust?

You'll be surprised how well it scrubs up. Have a gander at the inner wings, but it looks okay at this stage. Rangies are the business

Hi Stutab

That bit does worry me a wee bit. The floor of the battery box has parted from the chassis for a couple of inches, but didn't cause MOT fail. Will scrub up and see if I maybe need to weld in a new plate for the battery.

Chassis and boot are all surprisingly clean, only the front concerns me. Don't know what you call the plate which runs across the front front one wing to other, just behind the grill, but its a bit rotten. Don't know if I can buy this panel or will need to look at making a new one. Doesn't seem structural in any way, so going to grind out the old one first.

Thanks.

Jock

looks tidy enough for a 89,only thing i wud say, as lorri789 said have a poke at the innerwings, and have a good look at the sills, back floor, and the rear arches, and front footwells, all i will say is that front body mount on the nearside is looking abit scabby, maby some rustproofing, and some undercoat around those sort of ares!thumbs up on the colour tho, always liked red on a rangerover! :D

I had a lot of developing problems up front too. Scrubbed up and a few wee welds here and there sorted it. Rust converter, prime and paint.

They are the battery box and light box, can be bought from paddocks for a few quid. I am replacing both wings on mine but are gone on the arches more than the front, you can have them cheap if you don't mind waiting for me to get the new ones sorted.

Thanks Stutab, I'm just off the M40 up by High Wycombe so you're not far away from me. Might take you up on that, how much would you be looking for. I sort of think if she's going to be a long term project why not go the whole hog and do an inner wing and light box both sides...

The bit I'm worried about is described as "Front cross member to valance and wheel arch assembly" - the small box section sitting on the chassis mounting rubber is properly holed on one side. Will attach some pics later tonight.

Cheers
Jock

I was going to do a simple gear box change and a bit of welding on mine. If you look on my thread you will see it's turned into a full strip and rebuild.

I am sure we can come to some arrangement :p

YRM are the muts nuts. Expensive but worth it. British steel fabricated in Yorkshire so good to weld to.

Well I now realise that is a rear x-member, I got a bit of over enthusiasm there. But they do the front mounts too, so I will call them and price up some new mounts and rubbers.

My body mount was about £24, didn't get the bushes through them, not got any yet. Think Paddock were the best at about £8.50 per mount for the full kit.

Got the bumper and front end off at the weekend so I could get in at the boxes and mounts properly. Pictures are attached. As you can see, both boxes are pretty knackered, but the N/S is completely gone and the chassis mount is holed and it's rotten underneath too.

Right, sorry for being a numpty here, but am I right in thinking new light boxes would include the box section for the chassis mount? So if I cut out and weld in new boxes then we should be good to go?

Thanks alot
Jock.

Hi Jock,

The boxes include everything from the body mount up. I would suggest getting the parts before getting the grinder out.

I have worse on my 88, luckily its the donor car :D

I have been recommended to both. Put Paddock footwells in mine and never had a problem, would go with YRM but can't find a complete wing with light and battery box where as Paddock do them.

Had email conversation with both and both use British Steel but Paddock parts are .5mm thicker. Only other difference is the finish coating.
