just want cold hard facts on this , im doing the rose tinted glasses all on my own
its been 20 yrs since i last did this but!
I have a 90 that is looking a bit tired and has just scraped through the test with a bit of welding on the rear crossmember (will need a new one next time)
Is it worth stripping it down at the end of the winter putting a new chassis on it and generally rejuvanating it or will it be cheaper (short or long term) to get rid and replace, i also have the option of putting a new (second hand but free) crossmember on
and where is the best to get a galv chassis

Marsland will do you a complete galvanised chassis for about a grand...

How long you wanting to keep the 90? How good is the engine...come to think of it, what engine is it? You may want to put a 200tdi in it. When its done it'll last forever but you're looking at 1500 quid plus your time...

You may want to consider selling it now with the full mot and buying a defender with the above for 3 grand plus...

Pictures would help to give an idea of the overall condition etc..
 
On the other hand, if you rebuild your existing one you'll know exactly what nasties are hidden away and there'll be no unpleasant surprises. It's also good fun, if you enjoy that sort of thing. I'm about halfway through rebuilding my series on a Marsland chassis and I've had no problems so far - just a few holes to drill and tap for the brake pipe clips and a couple of holes to ream out the excess zinc.
 
it is a defender 90 and i believe has a 300tdi in it runs great but could do with a new set of gaskets etc , in reasonably good nick obviously rear X member is dodgy but rest of chassis seems OK some of the fixing places on the body are starting to corrode and will need attention, if i decide to do it I will probably replace a fair bit of suspension and braking system as well
i have been told its worth 2.5/3k in its current cond, is it worth spending circa 2k doing it or can i get a similar vehicle for a lot less
 
Pictures would help...also to id the engine. Look, it doesnt sound too bad...a rear x member isn't a great deal of money and reasonably easy to change...the other stuff sounds repairable. If it was me and i was happy with the old girl (what year btw) i'd repair rather than replace...at least you know what you've got at the moment.
 
something I found out with my series is it's "better the devil you know"

I'd spend what I had to to keep her on the road at the end of the day I know I can go out, turn the key and drive with confidence in me motor
