Following on from the thread on "new chassis" I called in at
Strathearn Engineering today as promised. This firm now specialises in
fitting new galvanised chassis to Land Rovers and is located in
Aucterarder, Perthshire. In fact, they claim to do anything to do with
Land Rovers! Web page at http://www.strathearnengineering.com/
I met the owner, Martin Jenkins, who is quite a young chap. He told me
they made chassis for Series I and II's on the premises having
purchased the jigs from Solihull but the more recent chassis are
bought in. (What IS the plural of chassis???).
He reckons their company is now the largest Land Rover chassis fitting
business in the UK and as the UK fits more chassis than anyone else,
thinks that might make them the biggest fitters in the world!!
Martin and his partners purchased what was an agricultural engineering
business with a side line in Land Rovers two years ago and is already
moving to bigger premises. He employs 12 people and some of his
engineers have been working on Land Rovers for over a quarter of a
century.
Seeing a stack of scrap chassis at Streathearn has convinced me that
my 300Tdi really does need a new chassis. But I did think to do a deal
on one of the scrap ones as they all looked better than mine!<g>
Martin explained that he would probably be willing to make me an offer
for my 300. I asked for a ball park figure. His offer sounded very
attractive indeed. Transport is no problem either, as he has his own
trailers for collecting anything that is un-road-worthy.
I am still undecided about my own Land Rover but will probably give
the work to Strathearn. I was impressed with the professionalism of
the whole set up, but mostly with the straight forwardness of Martin
Jenkins who is a man you can do business with.
I have no connection with this firm whatsoever. The above are my
impressions from a brief visit. Somehow I think we are going to hear
more about this company.
