4.6 Thor engined p38

Hi guys
Ok so my car has had a Turner recon engine and new head, cam and valves etc only 1800 miles ago. It was stood unused for 8 months before I bought it. In my ownership 1500 miles she has always had a bad tapping noise. She has failed the mot and had it confirmed as a stuck valve lifter.
Now I was thinking of just going in and replacing the sticking valve lifter on its own as I was thinking there shouldn’t be much damage in there with the low miles on newish parts.
Am I being foolish??? Or will I have to replace cam and all lifters???
Don’t want to spend a shed load of money on the car??

My understanding is that a new cam and lifter set pair together very quickly, once this has happened you can't replace a lifter on its own. You might get lucky, you might not, i can't answer that

if you can decide which one it is just change it

+1 on the above. If you can identify it, just replace it. If you can’t, replace all 16. Make sure it is a lifter and not a damaged rocker, which can give you a similar sound.

Spent all day stripping the engine down. When I got to the pushrods and valance lifters my problem became obvious. One lifter is jammed and the push rod is just rattling about. I hope it hasn’t done any more damage.

If the lifter is jammed, what does the cam under it look like?

Yep Turners and RPI are not my first choice.

V8developements all the way, top chaps

As for your follower you can change it, however it would be worth checking the lobes to make sure the hardening hasn't been damaged by the seized/collapsed follower.
The Follower bores aswell are worth checking.

@MrGorsky another Turner engine rebuild that looks ****ty. They turn up regularly on here with problems. Just 1 worker cutting corners?

Thanks for the great advice. Just talked to Ray at V8 developments and he has given me some excellent advice

As there appears little wear on t he cam he suggests I remove the lifter and free it off then refit it as it will now be paired to the cam. Putting in a new lifter will likely cause more damage.

What's the base of the lifter like? They can "dish"

Get a dial gauge from eBay, and measure the cam lift. When I was rebuilding my project car, the cam looked fine on close inspection with no pitting, etc. Measuring the lift on each lobe showed 3-4mm differences.

Standard cam lift is 9.94mm, so you need a gauge with >10mm. I bought this one.

Just a quick update. It turns out the tip has snapped off the rocker. Luckily the bits are all there and haven’t lodge anywhere

Check for a good oil supply when you rebuild the rocker shaft
