Just bought new battery from main dealer. Problem is they have discontinued part number STC8587 and replaced with YGD100860 the posts on the new battery are now central, and the leads will not reach.
Old battery is dead cannot start car. Telephoned main dealer (I am in France) he says there is a solution but he cannot explain, so not a lot of help as usual!!
Any advice please.

STC8587 should still be available from main dealers for cars up to 1998. Up to VIN number WA410481. YDG100860 was fitted to diesels from 1999. From VIN numberXA410482. To fit that to a pre 1999 car you will need positive lead YTA101690 and negative lead YTB101350. They are daft money. Get them to supply the correct battery. Main dealer battery prices are ridiculous, don't know how much you paid but you can get a better unit than the one they supply for less than £100.00.

No way! Anyone got the old Megastore reference? Presumably he'll have the smaller alternator at that age?

Lower setpoint on earlier ones or has that always been 13.8V?

As far as i am aware set point was 13.8 til 1999 then 14.2. Mine was made 1998 registered 1999 so was 13.8 but i have upped it to 14.2. You need at least 14.2 if you put a battery on that has any calcium content. And 14.5 minimum for full calcium or they will sulfate up and die. Unless you take them off now and again and shock charge them to de-sulfate. ;);)
