Hi,Ive just bought a 1996 registered (1995 build) p 38 diesel manual.
Struggling with the following
Oddometer comes up fault,
the clock mileage says 106,000 but the mot last year said 104,000 and the one before 124,000 has she been clocked? I didnt think that it was possible?
overheating- idles fine but as soon as you go on the road up she goes on the temp into the red and the heater loses its heat ,rev it and the heat comes back and the temp drops to 12 o'clock. Had the stat out and its opening at 84 degrees so it looks ok. Had the pump out,its a metal impellor one and seems quite good.Anyone have any ideas?
If it helps ,the hoses dont go hard etc and the bottom hose is really really hot but the top one is cool. ?
Checking the rad with the marble job tomorrow but this one is a bit of a weird one.
Theres no smoke from the exhaust and no moisture in the engine oil.
 
Check the Rad surface is warm all over and not patchy...the Diesel Rads are top flow and need the baffle so as you say do the marble test....you may find it is silted up at the bottom reducing cooling efficiency...Also check the viscous fan for correct operation...contact Datatek for his A/C Fans Mod for additional cooling.

My guess would be old rad and possibly an air lock if the heater goes cold!

The mileage changes if the BeCM or the Instrument pack has been swapped BUT it will default to the highest value (the BeCM and the IP both store the mileage and will revert to whichever has the highest stored figure)...it is either the MoT station messed up the reporting or the BeCM AND the IP have been swapped from a lower mileage vehicle!
 
If the clocks are changed, as Saint said the mileage should go to the highest recorded either in the BECM or instrument pack. However, I have seen reports that this doesn't always happen imediately. sounds to me like the instrument pack might have been changed to a lower mileage one. It is possible to clock them, not easy though.
 
It sounds like it's had problems & the last owner changed the ecu's over & sold it to the next unsuspecting buyer.
Mileages don't go down.

If it's a diesel, it shouldn't have a bottom hose. It should be in and out at the top. Hence the baffle which your marble test will check for.

(It will have smaller oil cooler hoses at the bottom depending on model)
 
He said manual. The gearbox oil cooler pipes go across the bottom.
