Picked up a new addition to the fleet on Monday, a 2001 4.0 Disco 2, white, with tan fake leather inside.
Has a couple of issues:banana:Coolant leak (not too bad but needs investigating) I also think that the transmission oil cooler may have a leak.
Apart from that not too bad (Oh yes. I forgot, the passenger side windscreen wiper does not move. O/S A/C vent does not work, Central locking has a mind of its own, bit of a clunk going from R to D, but I think that's it). :D
Just your usual stuff then. The good thing is because its lived all its life in Florida there is not a trace of rust, so mechanical gremlins aside its looking good. Paid $2800 of Ebay US and I reckon $100 to make V. V. Good.
Of course pics will follow

It doesn't seem to lose much, and its definitely not head gaskets (no emulsion, no pressurisation of cooling system) just drips a bit and smells of coolant. Oil is not from engine, I don't think its power steering but there is 2 metal pipes bottom of block running towards gearbox on drivers side that are wet with oil. (sorry driving on wrong side, so that should be UK nearside of engine). Its going to a local indy for check up tomorrow so time (and check book) will tell. Oh yes... I meant to put $1000 in 1st post (although I wont be too upset if its $100)

Hi Fizzer, From what I can see she looks like a nice Disco! Do you plan to go through her and give her a really give first-to-you service?

I do when I get another vehicle:

All oils - engine, gearbox, transfer box and diffs;

All filters, Both engine oil filters (assuming the v8, like the TD5,has 2) air, fuel, ACE valve block filter;

Coolant and brake fluid;

Discs and pads if necessary.

I find the single biggest benefit of this is that I have to give the vehicle a really good look around, to do the jobs. This helps me to find leaks etc.

Good luck with your new purchase,

Dave

Thanks Dave. Yes the plan is to go through from front to back changing all fluids and filters and making a list of things to do.
:)

So, I've had the list of things that need doing back from the garage and their advice was to sell it!
ABS pump knackered
Valve covers leaking
Leaking coolant and oil from Cylinder heads
Misfire between cylinders 5 and 7 (head gasket suspect)
Engine front cover leaking
Power steering pump leaking
Front driveshaft missing needle roller bearings and rusty inside where bearings should be.
Passenger side wiper arm stripped (spindle)
They were quoting about $5000 to do the work. I have told them to do the driveshaft(not wanting an exploding driveshaft joint/gearbox cat ass trophy!) so me and the missus can collect it safely, we have about 50 miles to drive from the garage to our house.
That alone is $750
The rest I am going to live with or repair myself a bit at a time.
The ABS on my 300tdi hasn't worked as long as I've had it FFS and cant say that its missed.
The leaks I count as an automatic fluid changing system and can only be seen as an advantage in my opinion.
The head gasket could get a bit irritating, but I'll get a gasket set the next time I'm back in the real world at the end of September.
A victim of these ####ers seeing LR as a luxury brand and not a working tool! If I wanted it to be brand new I'd have bought a brand new one, ####whits!

you could do most of that over a weekend... just don't let it overheat in the mean time you could end up with more serious issues

That's the funny thing. They say that they suspect head gasket failure but there is no pressurisation in the header tank, there is no cottage cheese on the oil filler cap, there is nary a trace of steam from the exhaust. The engine ticks over fine and I have left it ticking over for 15 - 20 minutes on my drive (bearing in mind we are currently "enjoying" a pretty constant 90 - 95 degree heat here) with a temp needle at a steady middle of the gauge position. :wtf:

hi fizzer,get a coolant sniff test done to see if there are any hydrocarbons present in the coolant.that will tell you for definate if the head gaskets have gone.or god forbid it has dropped a liner.common fault on v8 petrol engines unfortunately.good luck.;)

Thanks. The problem here is finding someone that is experienced with these weird foreign vehicles. I think there is a British guy on the East coast that has a LR garage so I may try to contact him. The current analysis was done with a plug in analyser which showed up the misfire and the fact that it smells of coolant under the bonnet when it is hot!!
Your advice much appreciated.

ok,but surely there must be a a local garage that can do the sniff test as it is common for all engines.not just weird british ones ya cheeky sod.:p:D:D

I'll try when I get it back on Tuesday next week ( labor day Monday so everything shut)
I am actually a Brit expat so officially allowed to call LR weird :D. Really appreciate your input on this, the wife thinks I should just cut my losses and scrap it :eek: but I have every intention of repatriating this car in a couple of years, so just need to keep her going until then.

ok,being a brit yer forgiven,but seriously it is a common prob for the piston bore liners to slip.if that has happened just scrap the engine and buy one that has been "top hatted".this is an engine that has had modified liners fitted that do not allow the liners to slip anymore.they only slip by a few thousands of an inch,but it is enough for it to pressurise the cooling system,just like a failed head gasket.:(

I'll definitely keep a close eye on things when she gets back. There is someone doing diesel conversions over here now but they are importing 300 tdi's from (I think) Lincolnshire at $10000 (yes I really did say $10,000) and fitting them for god knows how much. You would really have to love your Disco 2 to spend that kind of money.
I am thinking the best plan is to run the engine I have until something bad goes wrong and then replacing with a modified V8

ok,but get it check properly before you make any decisions.hopefully if it does need any engine work it will only be the head gaskets.plus i dont think it will be worth bringing back over here really???

Your probably right, from a resale point of view, but I will probably hang on to this (and the 1996 tdi I already have in storage in the UK) until I am scrap.
A pleasure to speak to you, I will keep an eye open for your posts in the future. I have to turn in now.
Regards, Duncan

I'm from Congleton in Cheshire, not too far from Stoke on Trent and about 20 miles south of Manchester.
How about you?
I have a company, in Florida, servicing and repairing residential swimming pools. So I have to spend quite a bit of time over here. I am back in the UK from the end of September until the 1st week in November and again from the 20th of December until, possibly the end of January or February.
