Hi,

Went to se a 1998 Xedi with 100k on the clock at the weekend

It obviously has some trammission problems. as the propshaft bearing had gone completely but the guy said it's had a new rear diff and IRD, (never mentioned the VCU). so sounded really bad driving it as the propshaft banged about just with it ticking over in 1st.

according to the seller the "clutch had gone, possibly the gearbox!"

the clutch peddle was right to the floor and with a quick poke around i noticed it was a slave cylinder problem.....

aircon works as does the sunroof!

So.. a few discussions later (plus a bit or risk analysis!!) we settled on a price of £275 and i'm the proud owner of the "Nearly Free"lander.

went to pick it up with my dads freelander 2 and a trailer, looked good on the road, quite fitting.. was fun getting it on the trailer too.. start it in gear, point at the trailer and go!:crazy_driver: (hopes dad measured the ramps right!)

up first time no problem :)

Ok so first thing was assess the damage! rear prop off and out off we go for a drive, round the farm..

first impressions.. its quiet! no grinding IRD noise.. phew! got it upto 50mph through all the gears and gearbox is good too..

Next have the clutch hydralics off. it's pretty obvious the problem, the brake slave cylinder bracket has corroded, cracked and given way, the cylinder is actally all in tact, but out of fluid.. with no way to bleed it. it's buy a complete one. (unless anyone on here has a sneaky way?)
check the clutch lever isn't siezed. (wooden pole and hammer through the wheel arch) it's springy not solid :)
more good news!

So i've started getting a list together of all the parts i'll need and jobs to do.

so far i have:

New/Recon VCU. any recomendations? are recon ones ok?

new propshaft bearings.

New clutch hydralics

full service

Cam belts.

Drivers door lock needs some looking at (works but a bit loose)

1 set of bearmach rocksliders.

Drive it!

Thought i'd just pop on here a few pics of whats going on with it, so you can see the progress. There's plenty of videos and pics of step by step/how to's so not going to be one of those but just more for interest really.

Update:
I've got the prop off, and gonna change the UJ's whilst im there :) 1 is a bit tight. (Photos to follow)

Does anyone else have anything else I should add to the list for 100k L series? :biggrin1:

Steve

recon vcu from a reputable supplier like bell engineering will be fine and i believe they supply the bearings as well
think about a decat as this does improve performance
change the oil in the gearbox and ird however make sure the level/fill plug will come out before draining them
the rest you will discover as you drive so enjoy:)

Thanks for the info

I'll look into the oils, waiting for my haynes manual to come so i can find everything easier!

does it pass an mot with the dcat in place?

. I was going to get a recon unit from a local garage called freelanderspecialist.com (SueM i believe posts on this forum).

See below for some pictures :)

first off, i dont like it in here, its all a bit gay but with a username like stallionsteve i reckon you will be popular with the Gaylanderers.

now onto the thing about freelanderspecialists.com take a look at these two threads maybe it will clarify things for youhttp://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f9/refurb-ird-suppliers-226770.htmland http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f9/update-freelanderirdspecialists-con-artists-121509.html

now im off to scrub myself with some ep90 and a sandy rag to help forget i ever came in here:eek:

someone had to follow you in here you traitor :p:p

Just admit it, you love it in here!!!

Even though they are all raving puffs in here, they still drive something with a green oval and i remember seeing something about the gaff he was on about so dont really want to see him make another mistake:D

I havent read through all the posts on it but I was sure i had seen the name with a negative connotation somewhere.

Hi DiscoPol.

The name wasn't my choice.. blame 700quid on the disco section (discovering the discovery thread) .. he started it, but my hands are all covered in oil and i have manly stubble! (that doesn't really help does it!)

Thanks for the pointer, I've read the posts about it all and from what I can see there is a big difference between freelanderIRDspecialist and freelanderspecialist

one is a complete con, the other has been really helpful over the phone and i've heard good stuff about them. so the NON-IRD company is fine. (i'll let you know :) )

You will see from my potted history that I have been a disco man.. had a 200tdi, 300tdi, td5 and a RR classic lse.. all good fun :) but need something a bit more for the long journeys for work..

plus getting stuck is half the fun!

The Stallion ;)

Steve, don't fret yourself about some of the tratter or discovery channel nuts here, they're all shirt-lifters.....or uphill gardeners as some like to call them.....

I never thought I'd see the day :(.... Such a day of sorrow, a day for mourning, when one man.... Britains own Ron Burgundy if you will .... could fall so far as to buy a Gaylander... I am sad to say... I once called this man.. Friend...

On another note though!!!

DON'T BLAME ME!!!!!!!! :bolt:

I didn't start it, it is a reputation earned by having dance moves like elvis and no moral compass!!! :jaw:.......... honestly I don't understand it either but the ladies... well.. lets just say its an incredible sight!!...

There are many ladies... (I'm being extremely generous with that term) who can testify to this mans.... Special expression of dance.. If you would like a first hand account however then do the following....

Go online.. Purchase yourself a first class ticket to Singapore...
When you arrive proceed from the airport to the local taxi rank and give the first driver you see a $100 dollar bill and say '100 Club'
When you arrive proceed to the FOURTH floor... It is vital you do NOT stop on the third.. and ask for Lady Jane... the rest gentlemen and ladies I leave up to you.....

Oh and best of luck with the repairs mate :D

p.s just edited the above to suit your car tastes.... :boink:

Hi,

I've been looking into oils, looks like a bit of a minefield.

is there a specific oil you need to use with the gearbox?

and i take it a 75w90 is ok for the IRD?

just getting confused with some of the posts about on it.

Steve

gear box is MTF94
IRD is 75/90 to spec API GL5
Most aoto parts shops will have the correct oils

thanks i'm sure i can source them..

Just a little update, got all the spares i needed today, fitted the clutch master+ slave, and the clutch is working fine, so now she's driveable.... well ok make that stoppable!:car:

Started to pull the old universal joint out of the prop shat to replace them and came across something odd.

1 of the joints was grindy and stiff, so on taking it appart i found that 1 of the cups still had the plastic stopper in the grease hole, so it had run dry!

(see photo below.)

From the reciepts and the stae of the prop i dont think it's ever been off before.. has this happened to anyone else?

I've put all the new UJ's in, just pushed them together with a vice, and used a socket as a spacer.. thought I might as well whilst its all out.

so just need to reassemble the prop, pop it back on, then look at the engine. it needs cambelts, full service, and will change all the oils!!
have a feeling thats going to be more challenging than things so far..,

just finished for the evening and sat with a glass of port!
:beer2:
