Hi guys.

I’ve got a mysterious leak coming from the vicinity of under the air filter on my 2002 auto TD5 Disco. I suspect it’s coming from the oil cooler pipe (although I can’t find the leak). I want to top up the gearbox oil to see how much has leaked out/preventing it from going bang!

Can anyone tell me what size hex key I need to remove the filler plug? I don’t seem to have anything that big in my tool box.

It is a Torx TX 50.

Difficult to see if you are on your back and harder if things are dirty down there.

Tight, but easy to extract with the correct tool. 3/8” Drive TX 50 bit with a ratchet and short wobble extension makes it a piece of cake.

I previously thought it might be an 8mm Allen, but it is not.

I’ve had a hose union come adrift on the cooler pipe just above the top up/level plug.

Dumped the contents on the car park where my son parked this morning at 08:45 to go in and do his Economics A Level paper at school! Thankfully it didn’t let go on his 20 mile journey to school!

He sent me a video of a “strange type of oil” gushing out under the car on the car park before he went in to do his exam.

Close shave. Last time I trust my local Land Rover specialist to work on my gearbox, they clearly have not properly tightened the unions.

Using a 550mm Sealey Oil Syringe to get the fluid in.

I’d rather be doing it from a pit or with it on a ramp, but when you jack up the rear air bags it’s amazing how much space there is under a standard disco and what you can do on your back in a car park. (One reason not go get rid of the air suspension??)

Not sure how much has been dumped but the trail is possibly 100m long? I’ve got 5 litres of Dexron with me, capacity from empty is 9.6 litres.

5 litres is 10 visits with a half litre syringe.

Hmm!

HA!
Me too!
Tis a job I had to do over and over again when the joint, gearbox to bellhousing, was leaking. Carried a 2.5 litre garden pump sprayer around in the boot full of ATF which was so easy to pump up and then action using the trigger on the spray bar.
Carried the 3/8th breaker bar, short obvs, with the mini extension and the bit, which I seem to remember is 55 torx, in the door pocket. Got so I could do the job in 10 mins. Could only just squeeze under the chassis!
