Whilst ging to recover someone I got stuck in a river which ended up with water in the intercooler and box under my seat filling up. (Defender 2000 TD5).
Got towed home, disconnected air hoses and removed sparks, engine seemed to turn over ok by hand so turned over by key. Put glow plugs back in, check fuel filter for water (ok) and engine started after a bit of cawing over. But as soon as I touch the accelerator the engine light comes on with the slightest blip in revs increasing. She would sit & idle quite happily.

Check the forum and went for removeing ecu plugs and drying with a hair drier, they seemed to be pretty dry any way. Also removed the plug from the throttle. Now she wont start, has a wee cough. Battery is now charging.

AARGHH :(

Snorkle ordered this morning as per agreement by the wife:D

Went down the river to act as an anchor to a disco, but decided that my route was getting too deep. As I revered back I found a deep hole right at the drivers wheel. Door seals are less than average.

Trying to find someone local (n. ayrshire) with a diagnostic tool.

you could try carefully taking cover off ecu and drying it with gentle heat, and make sure all water is out of intake system
 
Intercooler, air filter box and all pipe work for the air is in the house nice & dry now.
I did get the 4 screws out the ecu, but the alu. top is a awkard to take off, and I didn't want to cause any more damage.

Can I swap an Ecu from another td5 or does it need to be coded? I wouldn't have thought it would as the keys aren't coded.
 
The ecus arent sealed units, well they arent on the disco td5 they actually have drain holes in them!
When my wiring loom packed up and let oil down the main loom i cleaned out my ecu with contact cleaner via the drain holes.

Brilliant pics im amazed the tdi and yours havent got a snorkel especially with water at that depth

There are various revision levels to ECM. Make sure yu get the same as or later, otherwise it may not work.

If you know about the hole in the river, it's ok. I was just unfortunate to find another hole whilst backing out. Snorkle is in the post.
Also just ordered a replacment pedal, £20 Ebay. But fuel pump comes on runs it's sequence when you pump it 5 times.



I did wonder if they are drain holes, but if the water is rising up, then the air pocket (assuming the rest is sealed) should be enough to keep the board dry. So what do I look for if I go for a replacment ecu?
 
Just heard from the wife, she's managed to borrow a Sealey diagnostic tool.

Another wee thought, being ex-commercial with pto winch, I also have a remote hand throttle box which plugs in below the seat. (It was this plug that let all the water in) The box has never worked and tus is never plugged in, but the plug is connect to a white box which then as a lead going into the wiring loom - i guess the ecu. Is this white box standard, if not can I just unplug it? Anyone got a photo of a TD5 ecu setup?
 
It could be throttle pot, It could be ecu, It could have lost the 5v feed to the throttle pot. throttle pot is the most likely candidate though.

For future reference the TD5 has 5 cylinders but only 4 glow plugs so you need to remove the injector on the fifth cylinder if you get water into the engine.

Yep we noticed only 4 glows niot 5. So I took off the viscous fan so a could put a big socket on the engine and turned it over by hand It sounded all ok so I went for the key and it did start. It seemed pretty normal.

Note Sealey diagnostic is not compatible. it's OBD11 :confused:

TD5's are not OBD2 compliant.

You need a nanocom, hawkeye or similar to read it.

Try unplugging the white box for the pto. I'm guessing that the engine revs will usually go up when the pto is engaged. I'm wondering if this is causing your problem as I rekon it will link to the throttle pot for the rev increase.

I don't think my white throttle box unplugs, I'm sure thhe loom is hard wired into it and hardwired where it comes out. I will get a closer look and get some pics. Maybe I could cut it out all together???
Picking up a Nonocom to borrow tonight, so once the air hoses & ecu are all back in place I will give it a go.
I have sitting on my desk a spare trottle pedal - i'm understand there are 2 types pb1 & pb2. Whats the difference, does it matter which I fit?

I'm dissapinted my snorkle hasn't arrived, just going to search the forum on fitting tips and which joints to / don't seal.
- another day in the office - looking forward to a day where I can get under the bonnet.

Well having left it sitting for nearly a week, I plugged in the ECU and othher elec plugs. stuck the air hoses back on. Nothing has been screwed tight. But when I turned the key it sprang into life and the throttle is working again.

Cost we £5 for a new air filter. Nothing else has been replaced.
 
Sounds like something was filled with water (throttle pot?) and has now dried out.
Seen it before with a 2000 TD5 90.
 
I'm lucky it wasn't more serious to the engine.
Got a spare pedal now, and lots of silicone to go around bits at the seatbox - I maybe will even extend the loom. Also waiting for the snorkle.
 
So yesterday was spent with project snorkle fitting.
I was quite surprised when it came to removing the exisiting air intake parts. The plastic scoop on the body pushes into a plastic tube which in turn goes to a flexible rubber hose.
1. no jubilee clip on the rubber hose.
2. The plastic scoop to tube is somewhat similar to a rattle fit.

So even is the water was just below the inlet on the body work, the water was simply pouring into the air inlet hoses.

If your reading this, whip it off and replace with a snorkle or at least silicone them together!

I aslo removed the EGR valve
