hey guys,

So the basic overview of my plan is to remove the 2.25 Diesel engines and replace with the classic RR 3.5 V8 petrol. I intend to upgrade the front brakes to disks (not looked into this yet *gulp*) + possibly change the front shocks + remove the full back and replace with cab only. I'm sure there will be more cosmetic additions!

Today was day 1 !! I have attached some pics in the hope it might help others - please feel free to ask any questions! I'm not sure much I can help at this stage but you never know :]

I'm driving a RR V8 put in a Series 3 lw with the RR 4 speed box, reinforced halfshafts, suspension upgrade and disc conversion (Chris Perfect). Its rough but awsome offroad. You will love it.

enjoy the project

Sounds Nice Ruari! I have actually changed my mind and am opting for a 200 tdi instead.. I think for my skill level in mechanics etc its a better choice.

i used Oakey Paint & Rust Remover | Screwfix.com (great bit of kit, wears down a little too quickly but does a great job!) to get the most of it off + a small cone shaped wire drill bit attachment to get in the hard to reach places!

Saved £60 on shot blasting :]

saving the pennies by spending effort is what its all about mate .........and those rims have come up awesome if they were mine id be tempted to see if they all come up the same way and equally as good then hot laquer them to make them stay shiny like they are :D
hell of a job so far mate keep it up :clap2:

Thanks Johnny.

Thats not a bad shout you know! I kind of have a colour in mind though :]

Look hat just turned up.. The lid needs some work and the rear windows are jammed shut. Bring it on!

only reasons for needing the disc brakes is simplicity, no adjusting/balancing once fitted, dries almost instantly after wading, "should" always pull up square and no brake fade

in a play toy of an 88" i personally wouldn't go to the expense of discs (you'll need a new servo and mastercylinder i think)

i've uprated my front brakes by using rear brakes from a 109 which gives 11" drums and single leading shoe backplates, this allowed me to retain the original mastercylinder and brakepipes

upside is they don't need adjusting so often as 10" brakes and the shoes last longer

downside is (i think) they take longer to dry out after wading

to be fair 10" brakes work well in an 88" even with a 200tdi under the bonnet, the engine is the same weight/size as a 2.25 it's just there's more available power, the limitation in stopping an 88" (or any other car) is tyre adhesion and i've had the rear wheels off the floor in my 88" on 10" brakes even without a servo

i've since fitting the 11" drums fitted a dual line mastercylinder and servo but only because my original m/c started to leak and i had the dual line bits sitting on the shelf
