Hi im new to the forum and obviously read up before making this post.

I used to have a p38 4.6 v8 and had no problems at all, changed it now and the first day i got newer 2002 4.4 hse i did 16 miles and problems!

Car ran fine at the garage etc, the set off ans temp went up to 3/4 and back down to normal, again 2 mins later it went to 3/4 again so i pulled off into services then BOOM under the bonnet and steam everywhere- the header tank had exploded ito 1000 bits and made a right messeven breaking thw headlight and indicators!

Turned off the engine straight away and rang recovery, engine starts and runs sweet still but i cant believe what happened, has the head gasket gone to make so much pressure to blow the tank up ? Or has the weather affected anything causing a problem previous? Any ideas and help welcome, not happy at the moment to be another range rover owner waiting for another problem everytime i turn the key!
Thanks

Nick

who you buy it from??

Bought it in nottingham, managed 16 miles n the way home then it broke down.

Suprise suprise the garage owner didnt answer his phone then when he finally rang back swore down there we no problems with it!

If i put a new header yank on and bled up properly do you think ot will be ok? Or am i better off fighting to use the shoddy warranty he gave me?

Thanks

use the warrenty your paying for it after all and there must be a problem somewhere,
take the oil filler cap off and look to see if the underside is a cream colour..if it is its a sign that water is getting into the engine which will cause the overheating'

Checked the oil on dip stick and cap and looks fine to me.

Previous owner said the vehicle hadnt been used to about 2 1/2 months since the tax ran out.

Am i going to be left with a massive repair bill or do i have any thing else i can do bearing in mind it was bought from a garage?

Hi.

Sorry to hear of your problems, i think you have to push the problem back to the garage you bought it from.

Did it come with any kind of warranty?

Even if it didn't then check out the thread as suggested by the mad hat man get it back to the garage for them to sort out.

Nick.

Back to the garage it should go!!

I bet by buying from a garage you paid higher than you could have done by buying private, you have then paid to have extra rights.....now is the time to use those rights!

As above see the mentioned thread.......

Sale of goods act, not fit for purpose end of story. Take it back insist on a warranted repair or you money back.

Sounds like cylinder pressure leaking past a blown headgasket and going straight into the coolant system to me....
However, thats not an issue you should worry about....

As others say, you bought from a garage/ business, not a private seller, so by law you still have consumer rights, even with the item being pre-owned/used and not new. (unless you've signed something saying the item has known issues shown/explained to you etc)
Time to exercise those rights...and lets hope you don't make an appearance on a future episode of rogue traders

Right its sorted now, the problem was a faulty filtet on the lpg system. Because the lpg uses the water system the filter was blocked and blew a diaphragm in the vaporiser causing lpg to leak into the coolant causing so much pressure to blow the header tank twice!
Now the engine seems to be running on the cool side, not getting much above 1/4 and blue.
Should i worry about this or just carry on?

Shouldn't the pressure cap stop this from happening? Over pressure and the cap lifts.... A header tank should not explode??? Check the rating of your cap..
Just my thoughts...

Cap was changed when the header was first time, so thats brand new now. Any thoughts on the cool running temp or is that usual and i should be glad its not running warm!!

Have they taken the stat out to mask a cooling system problem?

If it doesn't heat up fully wont it affect fuel consumption too?
