Hi Guys my first post in this section.:)

I'm picking up my First V8 Discovery on Sunday, she's a 95 model 3.9V8i, full dealer service history up to 72,000 miles and lots of service receipts after that, new cat fitted 1000 miles ago as well as a set of BFGoodrich AT's. Chassis and body are completely solid, the boot floor has had some recent welding so its good to go! I have a thread running in the Disco section with some pics. http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f8/my-new-v8-145880.html.

I'll be giving it a full service, ie. all the fluids and filters, I also need to change the rocker cover gaskets as she's leaking from both. Also there is nick in the drive belt so that will be replaced as well. I'm more used t the 300tdi engines and this is my first V8.

So my question is, what else should I look for? what else is likely to give me grief, prevention is cheaper than cure imo, so is there anything else I should look at/replace? Thanks in advance. :)

I forgot to mention she has 136,000 on the clock.
 
Well done a proper land rover engine in a land rover no smokey diesels!
I would if you have no history do the cam it will save you money in the long run

Do the cam? Sorry as I said I'm new to these engines, do you mean replace the cams or change the chain? (I'm assuming its a chain in a V8)
 
Camshaft......they suffer from wear and can be fooked at 70k.

Cheers, I'm assuming I'll be able to check the lobes when I change the rocker gaskets then, I haven't gone through all the receipts yet so she may have been done, I'll have a read on Sunday, there's a shoe box full of paperwork.

Hope it goes well for you. Yeah, like you say, a full service is a no brainer.
My advice; get a couple of service kits n plenty of good motor oil. Regular oil changes are a must. every 3000 miles I do mine.

Do the service n enjoy the motor
 
no the cam is under inlet manifold in valley

Yes just sussed that one from another thread, so whats the signs of a worn cam, without removing it?

you might get away with just nipping the covers down. much bigger job to replace.

I was thinking of getting the engine steam cleaned to get rid of the old oil runs, I can see then where its leaking and to what extent.

Watch the electrics!!

i would use a brush and cleaning agent to be safe..
 
Don't forget the rev limiter cuts in around 110mph so that's your max but I got 120 going down hill but it's not that pleasent with the limiter cutting in so havn't bothered any more.. :D

I guess my cam is battered aswell then because the motor will rev to 5500 if pushed but it seems to lose any willingness to go further than 4000 really.

God im looking forward to rebuilding it, im considering it my last job once everything else is sorted (mainly a rust war at the moment)

Good choice and good engine. Save your money for the bad days and don't try to change everything now bse you don't know what will come up. Always change your oil and coolant.
