Hi All

My 'new' (1991) defender will not turn off and I have to stall it. It is an intermittent issue, sometimes it turns off beautifully. I'm having the whole thing re-wired on Wednesday as the wipers go when the headlights are switched on or flashed and the previous owner must have cut through the loom and bastardised the whole lot.

Do you think its a fuel solenoid or ignition switch issue? How could I find out?

Cheers

Chris

Yep!

It's located at the rear of the fuel injection pump.

Remove the wires, clean around it, then unscrew - make sure you don't leave the washer or o ring behind - they're best replaced at the same time

If you end up removing the stop solenoid, pull the plunger out and have a good look.If there are any small flecks of metal there you need to get the injector pump rebuilt. Its a sign of the cam and rollers starting to break up,the little bits of metal are attracted to the stop solenoid as its an electromagnet.
Not good......

Have you tried turning the key the other way??? I know its probably a bit difficult with 2 thumbs on each hand, but give it a go. Might work.
