Hi

I was looking for a cheap series project when I was offered a 110 SW for a price I couldn't ignore, I went to have a look and luckily my wife fell for it as well and bought it for me as a birthday present!

It had previously been kitted out as an overlander so when I bought it, it had no interior apart from the drivers seat and several random holes everywhere I soon sourced a replacement interior on eblag and went down to pick it up

When I bought it I knew that the transfer box was a bit suspect but the horrendous clonks moving it into my workshop meant that it needed some immediate investigation! when I drained the oil I found two whole teeth!

Also while looking through the interior I came across this

After a bit of googling I discovered that it is part of a TMAX split charge and battery monitoring system, all I need to do now is source a replacement monitor.

I also have a hopeless LED addiction so when I found these I had to have them!

I know they wont be to everyone's taste but I like them!

I am on holiday for a week now but I have another week off work afterwards and I am dedicating that to trying to get the Land Rover ready for its MOT!

Nice looking landy, I too have fitted theese headlights :) and hoping to do all other lights in led soon

I've also got my eye on the rear, side and indicator led set but that will be an after its on the road purchase!

yeah, one i'm looking at is all clear lenses too, but can't seem to find any that come with led's for front wing indicators.

Well after a holiday I have managed to spend some time on the Land Rover!

It didn't look promising when removing the transfer box drain plug revealed this!

Removing the transfer box and removing the inspection plate revealed even more horrors!

This was a small selection of the metal debris cluttering up the inside of the transfer box! On the plus side the mainshaft splines are in perfect condition!

Before this I also managed to fit the rear seats and seatbelts and the rear door cards!

Does anyone know where I might be able to get hold of a set of the vents for the roof? So far everwhere I look they only come with the roof or break during removal!

Plans for tomorrow are to fit the replacement but as yet untested transfer box, front seats and door cards and start stripping the front axle to change the swivel housing seals.

What is the best way to find out the ratio of an unknown transfer box? it is missing the normal ratio sticker!

Well today I went back down the workshop to continue working on the Land Rover, main job being the fitting of the transfer box.

After looking through the codes given online I deciphered that the broken box I removed was from a discovery, as was the replacement I was putting on! I managed to get it fitted by myself with few problems, main one being that at one point I actually managed to make myself an integral part of the vehicle! I was stood in the centre hole of the seatbox trying to jiggle the transfer box onto the gearbox when it slipped on the jack and I ended up supporting it, unable to move! I thought i was going to be there a while but I eventually managed to lift it on enough to get a bolt started!

Just need to finish tomorrow bolting the props up and refill the gearbox with oil and I can test it!

When I am working, when I get fed up with a big job I like to do a quick job with quick results so while taking a break from the transfer box I fitted the light bar I had left over from the discovery I broke a couple of months ago!

I also started having a look around the rest of it, to start making a list of what needed doing for the MOT and I was surprised to find that it had been fitted with a weight saving radiator!

plus the wiring seems to be a complete mystery, someone has gone to the effort of drilling a hole and mounting the trailer plug in the rear body but has put no wires to it, plus there is a switch tucked under the mudstuff dash that doesn't go anywhere! also while sliding about underneath I found some wires tucked into the front bulkhead outrigger that disappear into the chassis but until I get my multimeter back I cant work out where they go!

Had one of them there weight saving rads too on my 110, got new one from paddocks for £100 looks good and works well and other than blocking up one uneeded inlet was a simple swap :)

The main selling point for me was the galv chassis, even if everything else was knackered was worth that alone! just happens it was a bonus that it was the body style that I wanted!

the work that has been done on it varies from really well done to a complete bodge, the respray was done without masking up so the bottom 2 inches of window glass is grey!

Today was another Land Rover day, main focus being finishing the underneath.

I managed quite a few jobs off my list today, refilled all boxes and got the props bolted back up, had a bit of a fight with the handbrake shoe springs! Replaced a split exhaust hanger so the exhasut sits fairly normally now! It does seem to be a 300tdi rear section welded onto a 200tdi downpipe, upside being that it sounds really roarty!

I was then just about to start stripping the front hubs to repalace the swivel seals when I realised that I had forgotton my hub spanner so I thought sod it I'll put the wheels on and take it for a drive instead! was a quick reminder that one of the rear doors didnt have the catch fitted to it though! was quite smoky as well so will need the valve stem seals doing I expect, will put it on the smoke tester in the other workshop and see what the figures are as I want to get it on the road!

I also made up a plate for the centre and once I have got the two front seats bolted in I'll mount the cubby box as well and fitted my towbar

Am really pleased with the way its looking now as well, just need to hurry up and get it on the road!

plan for tomorrow is to strip and rebuild the front swivels and rear hub seals and having a look at why my fog and reverse lights aren't working!

Whats the armour in the background, its not an AVRE and 432 is it?

I'm in the middle of a bargain 110 CWS project too. Just trying to sort out the rear wiring then its a 200Tdi Disco engine swap and MoT time. Luckily I know the disco motor is **** hot as I used the disco for a year doing 20k miles without it missing a beat!!

Good luck and keep up the good work.

:D

Yep in the background and taking up my land rover space is an engineer bridge layer and a bulldog

I am getting to the point where I am running out of quick jobs to do when I get fed up of the big jobs!

Ha ha no definitely not a Sapper!

Well today was the last full day of this leave I can put into the Land Rover, back to work on Monday, so I set about changing the swivel seals and rear hub seals.

Being in the job I am, I have lost count of how many Land Rover swivel seals I have changed so I did it the quick way rather than strip the whole hub down

I just undo the bolts holding the chalice onto the axle casing and pull the whole lot off as one unit, then its just a case of undoing the bolts holding the seal retainer.

I then moved onto the rear hubs, thinking they would just pull off quickly, replace the seal and throw them back on, however this wasn't to be, when I removed the first one and was covered in rusty orange water that was taking the place of grease! luckily I had a set of bearings in my shed so I changed one over and will have to leave the other side for next week!

I also managed to find out two reasons why my reverse light isn't working, one there is no bulb and two one of the wires has come off the back of the plug! I also discovered that I have a wiring fault in one of my indicators and the fog light lens is held in with torx screws, and my torx bit set was at home!

I also had a bit of a helper today, if a little unwilling for photos

So the list of pre MOT jobs is getting smaller! I don't see the wiring being much of an issue, its one thing I actually enjoy! the other hub is less than half an hours work and then a bit of tidying and she should be on the road! Only thing I can see may be a problem is the smoke but I will put it on the smoke tester and see what happens!

Nice thread

Was the Discovery lightbar a straight swap? I thought it was slightly too long for the Defender.
