I've started to notice my 05 Freelander TD4 makes a muffled "thump" when getting back on the power. This occurs when accelerating after an up-shift or when coming back on the power in a gear.

You feel it more than hear it and I'd say it's coming from the rear. I'm guessing it's a worn mounting somewhere.

Has anyone experienced this and knows what it's likely to be ?

Probably the rear diff mounts. It has 3 and its usually the front one that goes, some times the back ones. Replace them with cheap aftermarket ones and you'll be replacing them again soon.

As above and do the One Wheel Up Test too, just to eliminate the VCU. Also make sure you have identical tyres all round with least worn on the rear. Running odd tyres or new front will load up the transmission, given you rapid wear of bushes and IRD.
