Hi, does anyone know how much mud tyres would affect the mpg on a 300tdi auto? Bought it with road tyres but have to go across a field everyday (v v sticky mud in wet weather) & will be pulling a water bowser across soon. Was going to get all terrains ( had bf goodrich on my 90 and they were brill) but have seen some free style alloys with good mud terrain tyres on at a v reasonable price, & as new bf tyres are soooo expensive would these be ok for daily driving too? (bit skint too as having it serviced and the cam belt done tomorrow!)
Cheers!

I have a set of AT's and MT's which I swap around. Without resorting to science my impression is that the MT's seem to increase fuel consumption by as much as 10%.

FWIW I run an auto V8 Defender.

generally speaking, you have two choices re tyres. buy a set of each and change over when required.
or buy a set of all purpose tyres and accept the limitations of them.
any off road tyre is going to give poorer performance on the road, and possible worse mpg too. you can accept these limitations and adjust your driving accordingly, or go for the first option.

tyre choice on the old series landys wasnt a real problem as they couldnt do more than 55 mph on the road. a modern 4x4 can do twice that speed!

a porsche cayenne with off road tyres must be fun!
