Has anyone any experience of mounting either an iPhone or a DSLR camera inside the car looking through the windscreen to video what they are driving through?

Both my Nikon D5000 and iPhone 4 shoot 720p video, so I'm not bothered which one I use really. Obviously the DSLR will give better results, but it's bigger and only shoots 5 minutes at a time.

So... any suggestions on methods of doing this, or am I going to end up resorting to duct tape around the rear-view mirror?!? :D

depends what yu drive. Best I've seen is a clamp arrangement that can be fastened to the passenger side dash mounted grabrail in a disco.

well i just so happen to have a 1997 Disco... how much was that mount, if you know/remember? I've seen one on the web for £60-70, but that's too much sadly...

Thanks again! :D

Thanks to you too, Gonzo.

However, I should state - I already have a small bullet cam which records 640x480 video. I intend to attempt to mount this onto the spotlight bar above the windscreen on the outside, but I was after video of much better quality (hence wanting to use my iPhone or DSLR).

The camera you linked to uses a 2GB memory card for 90 minutes of video, so it must be of similar quality to my existing one...

Thanks for letting me know though! :D

thanks again, redhand... i can't find anything like that on eBay sadly... any ideas what it was "known as"? I've tried searching for various combinations of words and no luck as yet...

Ive got the iphone4 mount for my rangey but it jumps around way to much to give decent video so thats why i use my oregon action cam but ive just bought one of these Vehos and the vid quality is fantastic and the voice activation is a great feature and you can use larger sd cards aswell mate.

A good dslr mount is a large beanbag as it absorbs all the vibration a good camera store will sell them or make your own.

good idea! what stops the whole lot sliding off the dashboard every 10 seconds though?

For example, when going through a wallowing, left-to-right-to-left etc. section what stops it all sliding off to one side, and when going up a steep hill what stops it falling off the dash onto the floor?

hmm... i can see what you mean now. I'm not too sure how I would use this particular one inside the landy, but I assume you really did mean something *like* this as opposed to "this will work perfectly for you", right?

It will clamp to the grab rail the door pull handle or even the top of the instrument binnacle. and the camera can be clamped in any position you want.

i'm being stupid.

I did click the link, of course, but looked at it and thought "how on earth will I use that particular one?".

Now it seems obvious that it'll clamp onto the passenger grab handle (as indeed you said it would)! I think I need to go to sleep. Very tired! *yawn* :D

Does the driver side have a grab handle? that may be better because my girlfriend can then continue to use her grab handle with no fear of damaging my camera. On the other hand, though, having the digital SLR hanging above my head is more likely to get it damaged through headbutting... i think i need to go sit in the landy tomorrow and just ponder what to attach it to!

Tie wraps or small bungee

My disco doesn't have a grab handle on the dash... I'm guessing it would have been where the passenger airbag is. Hopefully I'll find something else stable enough to clamp it to though...
