Well today I took me beast for a rather late MOT ......... Late been 2 months slight overlap on my behalf. Anyhow passed in the end !!! In the end you say ?? We'll needed two headlamp bulbs .....good that happy boy ..... On a different note I fitted a HID kit to my car as headlamps naff ...mot guy says no cos need to be self leveling ??? So changed lights....and passed now,drove home and refitted HID kit ..... Easy ... And as a footnote my hids are only 6k so don't blind anyone ..... And I live in the dark country side ...

So your MOT is invalid and maybe your insurance too?

I live in a little village and we have street lights in the village but once out of it there are no lights. I really don't know what problem people have with the standard lights on the p38 as I think the standard ones are adequate enough on high beam when needed. just my thoughts

I think it's a personal preference and a upgrade .... I personally like them but will have the reflectors checked .... Thanks guys

Your car isn't MOT'ed and should be off the road, fitting HID's after test invalidates MOT and are outright illegal for obvious reasons.
Hope the "scrappers" get you before you cause an accident:flame:

I assume you're no longer on air suspension then since your MOT tester said you can't keep the HID lights on? You should be able to have them on and pass an MOT test if you still have the air suspension.

The K number isn't the power output of the HID kit - it's merely the colour band of the bulbs. 8K for instance will give you a bluer light.

I believe the construction and use regs stipulate the headlamp reflector must be designed for HID use. So HIDs are not strictly legal as a replacement even on a car with self-levelling suspension and headlamp washers. I'm not preaching - I have HIDs too.

Ok seems a few remarks here so let's try this again ... Hid kits are not illegal at all car has wash wipe fitted ... Car does not have auto self leveling as used by xenons ... Let's not get the two confused ... Have had plenty of cars pass mot with hid kits fitted but as many will know some hid kits are very bright in fact to bright ... My hiss where fitted and headlamps where checked for alignment ....

No self leveling = illegal. Need to remove for MOT = illegal, MOT invalid = no insurance. Have an accident and it may bannrupt you.

A quote from a company that actually sells the bloody things "The only HIDs that are DOT approved are the ones that come factory installed on new vehicles. There are no HID conversion kits that are DOT approved. Therefore HID conversion kits are for off road, racing and show car use"

The headlamp units must be designed for HID use as the light patterns are different - there are plenty of MOT testers out there who are not exactly clued up on these matters and pass the cars (mine included) incorrectly. HID conversion kits are not DOT approved - they are not legal in the UK. If you fitted complete HID headlamp units to a car with self-levelling suspension (or headlamps) and headlamp washers they may be legal. But HID bulbs in headlamp units designed for incandescent bulbs are not.

As I stated before about brightness, the K number is merely the colour spectrum not the output rating.

Although strictly speaking (and insurance companies DO try it on) third party insurance as required by law covers the driver - not the car - if they can prove a known defect led to the accident they may be able to sue you privately - but voiding the third party element of your insurance would not stand in court. Recently a regulation has passed that says cars themselves must be insured to be on the public highway - but the third party liability element being for the driver remains unchanged.

I and others have been saying this for a very long time, but it has fallen on deaf ears. The P38 has perfectly adequate lighting as standard, no need for any modifications.

Ok re mot ... A mot cert says the vehicle was in a road worthy condition when presented for test !!!!
A blown exhaust ... Mot fail
Headlight/tail light out no mot
Bald tyres yes you guessed it mot fail
Cars etc can leave the mot station and be a failure at any point ...
So let's not go one and on .. These lights are my personal upgrade and until PC plod say remove or have a new done .ill leave be
