Hi all i have been asked to look at my mates Disco 1 which failed its MOT yesterday but i am in need of a bit of help to determin what the MOT examiner is saying.

"offside front axle swivel joing has excessive play"

dose this mean he needs a new joint?

it also says "offside rear bush worn" but it dosnt say which one....

can anyone help with the swivel joint, what should we be looking to do with it?

Thanks

Rob

ok so the swivel its the big shiny ball between the axle and the hub. This has two bearings in it. One at the top and one at the bottom. It also has two pins again on at the top and one at the bottom. The top pins has shims under it(has aplate on top with two bolts going through it holding it to the top of the hub). you need to remove the two bolts, lift the pin out take a shim or two then drop the pin back in, this should take the of the free play out of the swivle. Failing that you may need to replace the bearing i said about before

My balls are black is that a bad thing  :D, seriously though seen loads of chrome (or what used to be chrome) swivels so why are mine black??

I think there are black ones on the market also maybe different makers, at a guess. Do you have rubber gaiters on or is it just that the ball itself is black either ways if its dry then i don't think there is anything to worry about

chrome balls have been slaye grey since the mid nineties,if you find a chrome one it would be the pattern one

Chrome balls or black balls are acceptable, but brown balls mean your wife needs to wipe her arse properly :D

The black Teflon covered balls were introduced to the disco at the same time as the use of 'one shot' grease so later 96's, 97 and 98MY are black.
