Having reached the dizzy heights of 12.9 mpg from 2.25 petrol 1976 88, and with the rocketing cost of petrol, wondering if anyone has any tips on getting more miles per gallon. Intend to keep the petrol engine to preserve originality.
 
Only ever drive it downhill.
Seriously, that's not great consumption. What sort of driving do you do? I normally get 12 to 15 on normal running about and 20 on long sustained runs. Standard 2.25 petrol SWB with a Zenith carb.
 
i was getting about 17 - 20 mpg when it was on the road, not been serviced or engine touched as yet.... hopefully once done i will get 18 - 21??????
 
You are kidding me.....12.9 to the gallon :eek:
My 109 (5 bearing motor with unleaded head and weber carb) will return 23 to the gallon on a long run, and 15 to the gallon around town.
I must admit that i dont ramp it, but she does get a good blast out on a long run.
 
I don't know if there is a location for a block heater on your engine, but if you are doing a lot of short journeys, then this will make a difference.
 
'68 2A 88 does 22 - 23. gotta huge SU on it from a metro, apparently the needle is about right :)

make sure the engine is warming up properly (mine did 17mpg with no thermostat in it) and the tyres haven't gone flat or even down a bit.

check the timing, and that the vacuum advance thingy's not fallen off.
 
12.9 mpg! something wrong there.
My seris did 20ish mpg general driving and I got 26mpg from her on a run up to shropshire.
I would check your timing 1st.
 
Im running a petrol 2.25 fitted new distributor and carb, getting 12/13 mpg. today took oil bath filter off and fitted a K & N filter, goes better will have to see if the mpg goes up.!!
 
Fitted a Kenlow, to mine.....
....Did sweet FA!

Best results cam from making sure spark was good (new leads, plugs, denser, cap) and a wicked new timing lamp..... still did FA really in terms of percentage 16 - 18MPG.


...Buy a Suzuki?
 
From what I've learnt...

Basics:

  • A damn good service
  • Check tyre pressures and alignment
  • Carb rebuild
More involving/expensive:

  • New carb
  • Free wheeling hubs
  • Overdrive
  • Road tyres
  • Electronic ignition
  • Turner cylinder head
  • Range Rover Diffs (? - I hear these free up more power but I'm unsure if this would actually in-turn improve fuel economy, hopefully someone can clarify this!)
I'd never expect to get more than 20mpg from a good old 2.25 petrol though...:(

don't be disheartened, my Florence does about 16 to 20 around here, but last year, towing over 2 tonnes over several trips up to 40 miles she did 24mpg!
don't waste time rebuilding the original carb. they will not be as good as the Weber 34 ich which paddocks are doing for £75 if you order on line. Keep the original filter set up or the induction noise will irritate you.
