Hi Guys, more daft questions coming.

1) Is the little stub of the CDL that protrudes from the transfer box splined, keyed or does it have a flat on it. Just thinking out loud how the replacement cable end fastens onto said stubby shaft.

2) I see a couple of vids on that there U tube that shows the stubby shaft connected to a solid type of linkage, obviously to pull the shaft into lock, then able to pull the shaft back to unlock. How does the cable replacement work then, as it can only pull one way, pushing it back will just bend the cable?.

3) Any one close to Sheffield done the job of fitting the replacement cable.

As ^^^ the cable is the same as used in autoboxes - it can pull and push. The post on the transfer box has 2 flats on it - see the pic below

The big bronzed bracket is bolted to the top of the transfer box, then the smaller brassy looking part is the lever that goes onto the transfer box post - as you move the CDL lever, the bowden cable pulls/pushes this bracket and thus rotates the post engaging or disengaging the CDL. You can also fit D1 CDL mechanisms which have rigid link bars - see www.discovery2.co.uk / Disco 1 CDL into a Disco 2

Its a straightforward job. The hardest part is taking the metal top plate off the transmission tunnel. I replaced all the rivets with rivnuts to make it easier to get at in future.

Thanks for that fellow Disco'ites.

I have the gist of it now, after the excellent answers.
