Hi all

Have just finished doing the cambelt on my 200tdi.

I thought I had followed the 2 versions of the online instructions to the letter, but I have just put everything back together and refilled the header tank and water is ****ING out of the bottom of the engine without me even starting the engine.

It's coming from the bottom of the timing cover.

What have I done wrong?

:(

I don't understand. Why would water be in the timing case anyway and how have I fitted the cover incorrectly - too tight - not tight enough..??

Rangie classic

Only other thing I can say is that one of the three bolts that hold the water pump on snapped due to rust as I was removing it. I put a lot of sealant around the area when reinstalling

Is it this that is letting water into the timing case?

Nope - half the snapped bolt is still in there. One of the guides says if one of the bolts snaps a bead of sealant should stop any leaks.

Looks like I haven't been that lucky.

Is there any way to get the bolt out or do I have to start dismantling half the engine?

Turned out the bad leak was coming from the bottom of the water pump - being concious not to over tighten the bolts I had not tightened them enough and water was coming out of the bottom and running down to the bottom of the timing case. Duh. You live and learn.

I have left the snapped water pump bolt in place and sealed with a lot of Hylomar. Have not been out yet but have run engine at 2,000rpm for 10 mins and no leaks so far

I agree with you - just that after having done the cambelt I couldn't face stripping it all down again

Probably find in a couple of weeks I have to do a proper job. Grrr.

I know I know!

And I'll have to lift the bonnet and check for leaks every time the engine's been run!

I'm going to have to take the blooming timing case off aren't i

I had the same problem, and a feeling of doom descended over me. my friend steve came over with his oxy-acetylene and tried to get this bastarding bolt out too, but eventually I had to give in and get the whole timing case off. I even took it off again after doing it when I put the little round gasket behind the tensioner bolt hole in the wrong place. After having done it twice, and having cleaned every single thread and copper greased everything, I'm really pleased that I've got 60k of motoring without having to worry about it, and when I do it again, it'll be a piece of cake! It's a ballache, but it's a job well done, and that's a good feeling. I've got the advantage that the engine isn't in my vehicle yet though, pending me getting shot of the 2.5na! It must be a bit of a bugger if you're vehicle has to be off the road whilst you're doing it :/

or put some rad sealant in the coolant...

rad sealant can cause more problems than it solves! I went a winter without heating after blocking my heater matrix with radweld (on a laguna) :/

it just turns it in to even more of a bodge job :/

Did you use RTV sealant around the mating faces of the various bits of the timing case/pump where the coolant flows?
