Hi guys,

I was working on the exhaust yesterday and I noticed a bracket underneath the oil sump with two bolt holes in it, with threads going into the sump. I found a pic, you can see the two bolt heads in the bottom left:

Mine are missing. What are they for and do I need to get some in there? If so could someone tell me what size they are :)?

And maybe, just maybe that is the source of the knock that happens whenever I accelarate/decelerate and/or shift gears at low speeds! Thanks a million.

For what its worth, I'm thinking an ebay special, 'spares or repairs' auction or wheel nut sale would a be place to get the missing parts purchased!
Drop an update with a few pics when you get they bits fitted!
 
I was on the phone with Bell Engineering today about the transmission, and I mentioned this. They said that there's probably supposed to be something in there. Probably two M8 bolts, I just have to stick something down the hole to see how long the bolts need to be. I'll be able to pick them up from Halfords or screwfix and jobs a goodun.

I was on the phone with Bell Engineering today about the transmission, and I mentioned this. They said that there's probably supposed to be something in there. Probably two M8 bolts, I just have to stick something down the hole to see how long the bolts need to be. I'll be able to pick them up from Halfords or screwfix and jobs a goodun.

so you have two holes and your going to fit two bolts why ,if its not leaking oil out of then ,
 
When I sees a bracket wif two oles on top of a big hunk o' metal wif two oles in it, it sets me "that looks like there should be summat 'oldin 'em together" alarm in the old bean.

I reckon som berk forgot to put them back in when the oil rail and HG was updated. That's the most likely explanation. As in post #2, I think that torque dampening is it's most likely function. I'll have a good look when i fit the new exhaust manifold gasket this weekend.

Well I stuck two M12 X 30mm bolts with washers on at 40 f/lb and it didn't cure the knock. So I'm thinking it's something else. The rear diff mount has been replaced and at the moment the rear prop is off. It still sounds like it coming from the middle or front. Any ideas what it could be?
 
Well....yes...pretty much. The holes are 37mm deep with an M12 thread, so in line with the images of these bolts I've seen I put two in with washers under the heads. There were washer marks around the holes, so there were defintely fixings in there before. Some bugger just forgot to put them back in.
 
okay but what's the point of putting a bolt in a empty bolt hole ... if there is meant to be a bracket then fair enough but put the bracket on too.

If you look on the Gearbox and other main parts of the engine there are blank holes but this is because that component might be mounted slightly different on a different make of car.... so by putting a bolt and washer in a pointless blank hole is well kind of pointless and wont solve your knocking issue, you sure there isnt a bracket that goes there like in post #2

not trying to just be argumentative but im just lost at why you thought putting a bolt in a empty hole would solve a knocking noise :confused:
 
I suppose it's time I joined in the forum (hello from sunny Norfolk) I have gained a lot of information from it. The missing bracket is the "IRD support bracket", it fits around the drive shaft and has 9 bolts (I will try and find a picture) they are a pig to get some of the bolts in, when you see the shape of it you will understand why!I would think it was left off when someone had the sump off if they put the lower engine tie bar on first. I am not sure how needed it is but imho I would want to refit it.
