Hi, long time lurker - first time poster (having only recently got back into LR ownership).

I have a 1996 Disco 3.9 V8 auto, I've owned it for about a month now. When I first picked it up it was very sluggish off the line, after a bit of reading and testing, I determined that the vacuum unit on the side of the dizzy was shot and replaced it. That sorted that problem out and it now picks up nicely.

However, I have a problem in that at around 2k rpm (particularly when warming up, but to a lesser extent it seems to be there all of the time), it just seems like it's holding back. It has plenty of grunt below that, and above about 2300rpm, it has lots of power and happily revs right round if I boot it.

Any ideas what this might be? I've had a search through various forums and can't seem to find a 'common' fault (either that or I'm searching for the wrong thing!).

Could it be indicative of a worn camshaft perhaps? It has done just over 100k miles, and although it has pretty much FSH, there is no sign of it ever having been done. It does also have a bit of a 'tick' that sounds like a slightly stuck tappet, but it clears within 10 minutes of driving.

It doesn't feel like a misfire, but I have ordered new dizzy cap and rotor arm (genuine LR - been bitten by the cheap crap before!) and plugs - just in case. Also ordered oil, oil filter and air filter to give it a good service. Fuel filter was done about 6k ago according to the service records so I don't think there is any need to change that yet?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers, Martin
