Hi you'all. Iv been lurking here for some years getting work done on Colin my 86 Defender County. Over the years My ethic has been that nothing gets bodged when something breaks/wears out it gets replaced with new or upgraded parts. Currently he's running on a galvanised heavy chassis from Richards Chassis fitted by MudSport along with new bushes and copper brake lines etc and is pulled by a rover 3.5 V8 originally from a Stagg but again rebuilt professionally and fitted by a local garage. Everything else is original if scruffy. He really is a happy little car.
Now he doesn't go out very often nowadays and I'm thinking about selling him off in a year or two. I'm wondering if I should have him resprayed or not. I like him as he is so I wonder if the cost of a respray 1-1.5K would likely see a similar increase in sale value?
Also where's the best place to advertise him and what's a reasonable price to ask?
Thanks in advance peeps. :)

Triumph stag had their own V8, that had loads of problems, so do you mean somebody put a Rover V8 into a stag
And you have used that?
Tidy looking motor,

Yep its a rover lump That I bought from a guy who restores Stag's so probably the engine had been transplanted into the stag before I got it and moved it on.

What a great looking Landy!

I’d agree, keep it if possible. But if you must sell, I wouldn’t get it resprayed. Buyers like originality when it comes to bodywork, particularly as your 90 is very straight. The galvanised capping would make it more sought after too.

In terms of valuing it, it’s difficult as it’s been modified. See if there is anything similar on eBay and the LRO classifieds. Do you have an agreed value on your insurance?

Seems a long winded way of creating a sales thread. o_O
Its not a sales thread. Im genuinely just asking if I'll make the money back if I respray. I have a sensibleish new car ordered arriving in approx 3 years and I'll be selling then. Im saving like crazy and don't want to waste money or devalue Colin.

I'm not sure what kind of respray you'll get for that money. It's the prep work that is important and racks up the cost especially when there are a gazillion rivet heads to sand around. The best quote I had ages ago was £2500 if I supplied all the paint and that wasn't a professional sprayer, just a back street repairer who need some work. Mine is a few inches longer than yours though and it has a safari roof.

The cost of respray was more of a guess. I asked a sprayshop and they (helpfully) told me they recently charged around a grand to do a car that was "smaller" my landy so I thought ok put 1500 quid to one side. £2500-£3000 I recon I'll sell him as sound but scruffy ;-)

Deffo keep the paint as is. It’s honest patina.
I agree ! a mate and I spent two week ends cleaning his old series three shorty and then giving it a even better wash and polish it looks great with the areas where the paint has worn through.
Here on the High Veld, (Johannesburg 600 Km from the sea) rust is not a problem we sprayed the chassis with a mixture of diesel and petrol just in case.
Mind you it is going to stink for a while ! But , If he cannot handle the smell after a week or two I suppose a chassis clean will be in order.
The landy looks good as is, worn paint but shiny clean.

Keep the paint, IMHO. I amfe the mistake to respray some of the panels on my RRC, without any necessity, and regret it ever since. I try to not think about it, so. Keep it, when the rest, incl. the interior, are in good shape that patina should only increase the value. Not a lot of old classics around with original paint, most people prefered resprayed cars over refurbished original paint it seems.

I agree with various posts saying keep it as it is - I like honest patina and that is how mine is and going to stay like it. It's very faded now and 40 years of putting tools on the top of the wings has stretched the usual meaning of 'patina' but cleaned up rather than resprayed and it will look good. And original.

Ask again in a "year or two"!

Bloody hell what car takes that length of time to build between order and delivery?...
I ordered one of those pig ugly tesla pickups release set for late 2022. Yeh yeh I know your shaking your head saying why why why would you do that. I'll tell you no road tax, no petrol(solar powered from panels on my garage roof), 6 seats, ample luggage space in the front as well as in the back, 4wd, 500+mile range, 0-60 under 3 seconds, rust free stainless construction, fewer moving parts = less to wear out, self driving including summon mode and remote control parking for those tight spaces, tough damage resistant stainless steel construction and I like how it looks. Colins done me 30 years I expect my tesla to last just as long.

You'd be lucky to get 10 years out of the battery.
