I read a lot about petrol/LPG motors and people asking whats best. I once had a 95 4.6 HSE. on filling the tank, the trip computer said I had 253 miles on that full tank. The reality was more like 200 around town. I myself also asked all the questions about converting it to LPG and the guys in the know on here were around 30% for LPG and 70% against. I took their advise and left it as it was. After 6 months worth of gremlins kicking my ass around the car, I sold it!

I then bough a 98 2.5 diesel (BMW engine) RR On filling the tank on that one and setting the trip, it showed 610 miles to a full tank at 70 mph with the cruise control on. I realize this is probably optimistic and it wouldn't do that much in actual mileage, however the difference is unbelievable! Ok my diesel is a manual and doesnt have electric seats. But for near two and a half times the fuel economy, I can live with it. If your ok with spending the money on the petrol then up to you. If you have it converted to LPG it will cost around 2 grand. So in my evperence its even worh selling your petrol car and putting the money you would have spent on the LPG conversion and buy a diesel. To all the petrol owners please dont shoot me, Its just my experence of owning both petrol and a diesel.
 
Yer tottally missing the whole point of LPG ...LPG converted cars DO LESS MPG than petrol ..BUT its only 60 odd pence per litre & therefore Costs LESS to run

E.G your put £25 (Approx 25 litres)of petrol in car & get (say) 125 miles but yer put £25 of LPG (Approx 60 Litres) you get 3 TIMES the mileage FOR THE SAME AMOUNT OF MONEY!!!

Petrol is (Approx) £1.16 per litre

LPG is (approx) 60p per litre

LPG & Petrol car do (very Roughly) the SAME MPG ...but LPG is HALF THE PRICE


If you put 10 litres of petrol in your car it would cost you (Approx) £11.60 & you'd get say 75 miles

If you put 10 litres of LPG in your car it would cost you (approx) £6.00 & you's STILL get your 75 miles

I did some calculations and found my LPG Range Rover P38 cost me only 10% more on fuel bills than the same on diesel.

10% increase of cash but 100% increase of pleasure.

A Range Rover without a V8 isn't the real thing

I think what he was getting at was that if you have a petrol Rangie don't spend money converting it. Sell it put the money you would spend on the convertion on top and buy a decent diesel. Diesels have their problems we know that, but nowhere near as many as the petrol version does. They are a lot more reliable and cost less to run.
 
True I can see that too. However, the average mileage I do for example. I was pulling into the garage two or three times in the month. Where as now, on a good month I only go the once. I understand the more miles you do the more times you in there. But owning the diesel for me is loads better and Its a BMW engine too. Also I have a full boot space. I wanted to tell people about my experience, as I asked all the same questions about LPG as well.
 
My 2p worth. I have a 4.6 lpg that does 14mpg on gas (+ a bit of petrol for starting) I also had a 2.5 DSE that wouldnt do more than 21mpg and wouldnt pull the skin off a rice pudding !
I'll take the V8 all day long but each to their own. ;)

Dont forget lpg is 20-30% less efficient so i hear than petrol so it aint actually half price motoring... but way cheaper than silly mpg's on petrol :)

Yes the government will make sure it costs around the same over time, bet on it. Same with the electric contraptions, they cannot afford to lose the revenue.

But lpg congestion charge exempt. if you register it through the dvla as a dual fuel, you can get a reduced rate of tax
 
Has anyone actually managed to get reduced road tax or congestion charge for their LPGA certified Range Rover? It didn't do anything for me... my V5 states for type of fuel 'PETROL/GAS'
 
Re reduced vehicle duty on LPG, group for group you should be paying £10 less. You could only get London Congestion Charge exemption if your car was on the Powershift Register, and as I remember,there were no Land Rovers listed (the site is currently down so I can't confirm). In any case, that exemption ends on Christmas Eve.
 
Bought my 2002 Vogue already converted. Registered as an 'Alternative Fuel Car'. RLF is £235 for a year.

Fuel cost is about 40% less than running on petrol when you factor in LPG cost and 10% less mpg on LPG.

Cant tell whether its running on LPG or petrol without looking at the selector button.

Mine is running super sweet at the moment on gas. Its doing about 14 mpg . 230 miles on 75 litres of gas. Thats a precise calcuation of 26-27 equivalent to petrol.
Simple. Its cheaper and cleaner and quiter. No contest. And the oil is cleaner . Doesnt go black until 5k miles.
 
Just had my LPG setup serviced - new filter and a quick check on the installers laptop - for £40. The first tank of gas since the service (75 litres) and I've got 270 miles on the trip and still going! :D

Looked at converting to LPG when we bought the classic, but after some extensive research on here and elsewhere we came to the conclusion that the pro's did not out-way the price as at the time it was £1500 (more than we paid for the vehicle)and LPG prices will eventualy fall in line with petrol. So I would never have recouped the initial outlay as I dont do enough milage.
When we bought the P38 we couldn't find one already converted with the same spec so went for a strait petrol (as I am not keen on diesels anyway but that's just me)
At the end of the day all three systems have there advocates and there dislikers there pro's and con's, What may work or has worked for some one may not work for every one else. Personal preference.
Its A Range Rover Be Proud.
