Hi @lynall

wished to say a massive thanks for putting me onto those short UJ sockets , they were a life saver after trying absolutely everything in trying to get a bolt into a bracket, remembered I had them after nearly wasting an hour , got a set 10-19mm, so just used the ratchet with it and was done in a few minutes

plus spent a little while today putting some of my tools together , was shocked the amount of pliers I’ve accumulated, also really pleased with the new ratchet , blimey they make life a lot easier

can’t believe how many tools u need just to fit new intercooler pipers, air inlet, brackets, clips, t bolt clamps etc

just a massive thanks once again as if u hadn’t put me onto them I think I would still be struggling, lol

No idea if it was me or not, I post so much crap I lose track!
The amount of tools you need to work on anything modern is indeed shocking, only need to look at the size of mechs tool boxes from 30 yrs ago to what the latest guys are using.
 
Can never have too many tools.
Do like the plastic clip removal ones, mine are plastic themselves and generally a bit meh. Except for the single one that is metal.;)

Must admit really makes life a lot easier that’s for sure , indeed there’s always an excuse to get more tools, lol

Indeed u mentioned it last year , was having agro with another part and remember u telling me about them , very grateful as I must have tried another 5-6 items before I remembered I had these

ur not wrong there mate with the amount of tools req, I can imagine regarding mechanics and to think I’m just working on one vehicle so god knows how many tools are required , not forgetting specialist tools

imagine if a mechanic had to buy all the tools again would be in the £20k range if not more when including diagnostic machines

must have wasted around an hour messing around with just that single bracket , next job will be to get the last intercooler silicone fitted, then clean up the earth connections, plus noticed a positive cable runs near the front diff , need to cable tie that out the way, also the diff breather hangs down near the drive shaft , so will cable tie that as well out the way , once that’s done I’ll get the liner back in and drop it back on its wheels

has been a very long winded job, still got to test the sensors, reinstall the throttle body assembly

plus in the next few months going to put the smoke machine inside the cabin to check for any leaks , sometimes get water in the front passenger ever foot well , think it’s the weld at the top of the roof rails

Also bought a set of window glass seals, mine have bubbled up, never changed any before so don’t know what kind of job it is to replace them

When we used to go abroad with our kit cars, (I organised a week's trip every year for my club) I travelled with a wine box in which I put all my tools, and a tiny box of spares, plus a spare fan belt. W had a plastic Aldi style tool kit in hers.
did have to use both on several occasions. But that plus wheel changing gear was IT. One based on a Morris Marina, the other on an aircooled VW, hence the need for both metric and imperial spanners and sockets.
And I didn't have much more back home in the garage.
For my TD5 BOTH rear lockers are full of tools and some spares, plus the wheel changing kit. Oh and the two pockets on the back door!:rolleyes:

They were the days , lol, useto enjoy having plenty of room sitting on the tyre of my vitesse, lol , could u imagine how many tools u would need to take say for a more modern engine , I think coming from a freelander td4 to a D3 my tools have nearly doubled , alas though that might be me getting more tools than truly required , but at the end of the day they’ve made life a lot easier getting to various nuts and bolts

also a bigger torque wrench going to 400 ilbs ft, bigger bars as well to undo various wishbone bolts seeing the D3 have bigger items than the TD4 , along with more expensive diagnostics

talking of kit cars never forget one of my mates done a caterham with a tuned cosworth engine , omg that thing was quick , think he said something about the engine being blueprinted ??

Gary have you got a part number and price for the bottom window rubbers? as mine are also bubbling up and I keep meaning to take a look

No probs , here’s the link, first shows the full set , then if u look below it has the individual part numbers,must admit I bought the complete set as I thought I might as well fit every one , alas don’t know what there like to replace as never done them before ,

They weigh about as much as a pair of pole dancer's knickers so they go like sh!t off a very highly polished shovel.
Both Cobra copies and Lotus seven copies were by far the most popular kit cars, although I personally love the 1930s style roadsters.
Even though with a standard engine in they go like heck due to the weight reduction you gain from having a steel chassis bolted to an ally and fibreglass body, most of us tune them at least a bit, or else buy the most powerful engine in the model range of the donor.
I have never bothered to blueprint an engine, just rebuild it as cleanly as poss working within all the specs, but some go potty lightening everything, fitting scrapers to take the oil off the big ends as they spin through the oil above the sump, etc etc.
I'd rather just fit a good inlet system, a better flowing exhaust and a high lift cam, then increase the compression ratio by skimming the head. (You do have to modify the distributor curve a bit.)
Real old skool me. Cheap and strong.
The trouble with cars like your mate's is that they get extremely skittish especially in the wet and the concentration needed to drive them is high, and they are usually noisy.
Great for track days! But I like to go on touring holidays in mine!

on my vitesse I had a janspeed full flow exhaust made up for my 2 litre , plus had all the carbs balanced as it was difficult trying to get them done myself , because I never had enough knowledge would get a short engine done, at the time it was turners that done it for me, then I simple fitted the head and ancillaries etc , plus of course help from my dad

loved that motor as the 6 x cyl was so smooth , MPG well I think when I gave it the beans would end up gallons per mile not the other way round, lol , fantastic fun and know I would have got plenty more speeding tickets if there had been cameras back then , if not a few bans

that sound really nice , they certainly were nice down the motorway

u saying that I think it was also the same engine in the TR6, would have adored getting one of those, silly money now

but as a kid I always liked the jenson interceptor, oh and the rover V8 Coupe

had a 2.5 Pi once , didn’t have that for long, was a nightmare
