Does anyone know how easy (or otherwise) it would be to fit electric seats to a P38? Reason being, am thinking of replacing the manual cloth seats to leather ones but most of them in the breakers are electric. Is it just a pre-wired plug in job or should I keep looking for a decent non electric set?

If it's anything like fitting them in a disco1 don't fooking bother cos it;s a fooking nitemare..

If you had cloth seats originally then its likely you have a low line BECM therefore won't have the wiring to plug in the electric seat harness.

Have you thought about keeping the manual seat frames and just swapping over the leather covers and foam cushions?

Hi

I have the 96 DSE Trim type 2 so no electric seats but heated seats and leather all round.

Would electric memory seat upgrade work on mine?

Many thanks in advance

Adam

Wills would be able to confirm more on this, but I believe all DSEs came with the high-level BECM, and this can be identified by an H symbol written on the identification sticker? Then if a customer specified the electric seats it would have been a simple wiring loom addition on the assembly line, which is what you want to do now.

Thanks for the mention lanmjdun :D

DSE's didn't ALL have highline BeCM's - from the way I (roughly) understand it (this knowledge has been gathered through seeing wrecked P38's and spending way too much time online and playing around at my specialists yard), the early DSE's were equivalent to SE petrols. They dont have toys unless you specified that and paid for it.

So alot of early DSE's that were left standard will have a lowline BeCM, no cruise and other small things missing.

As the years went by it seems (and I would love it if anyone from LR or anyone who knew 100% could confirm this) that they decided to just stick a highline BeCM in the vehicles and only utilise the appropriate features and leave the other features built into the BeCM dormant. By the time the P38's came to their end LR were kitting out every vehicle with a highline BeCM. You can see this by looking at eBay and looking at 01/02 DT's (the lowest spec diesel). By this time, the DT still had leather, electric seats, 18 inch alloys, cruise, HK sound system and things like that.

So anyway, enough of my mini history lesson that is hopefully 99.9% accurate. The first thing to find out if you want to put electric seats into your vehicle is whether you have the good old highline BeCM we have been talking about.

Open the fusebox cover at the base of the drivers seat. At this point, you should see lots of fuses (if this is the case, things are going great :D). Now, the fuses are all surrounded by a black rectangular casing. Run your finger over the top of this casing to clear away any dust and dirt. You should see a label there, on this label you need to look for a nice big H. If its there, let us know and I can post the next chapter on what to do :D To be honest, if you have the heated seats you should definitely have the highline BeCM but best to check and let us know what you find :)

hmmm, in that case, I would have the front drivers seat out and look on the side closest to the transmission tunnel and see if you can see C912

I would be interested to see where the harness for the heated seats connects up to. According to the ETM if you have heated seats then the connector must exist as thats where the power comes from for the heated seats but I haven't come across a (L)owline BeCM with the C912 connector so I would be interested to know what you find :)

Hi wills

Not taken the seat off yet to have a look but I wondered would it be possible to retrofit a used (H)iline Becm in place?

What do you think?

As I have power to the seats it should be a swap and some CPU changes but would that do it, or is it not even worth trying?

Cheers

Adam

hi , i went down this road some time back, bought a leccy leather interior ,fitted it, NOTHING !,.all down to low line becm, remote key in birmingham can re map your car to another hi line becm,id planned to have it done ,bought hi line becm, then i found a mint lightstone manual interior,so sold hiline for 50 notes on ebay.ps if your stuck for the loom that joins the seats let me no, mines still under my front seats doing jack.good luck.

The short and simple answer to your question is yes, you can fit a high line BeCM if you want to - it all really depends on how much you want to spend to have electric seats.

The problem is when you get the used H BeCM it will first off all need to be unlocked and all settings cleared. You will then need someone to copy the settings from your old L BeCM over to the new H one. This can only easily be done by someone who specialises in unlocking and repairing BeCM's due to the fact some of the info they will need to get off your old L BeCM will only be obtainable by actually taking it to bits and accessing it directly with a special diagnostic module and cable.

So you would need to send off BOTH your BeCM's which means you would be without your P38 for a few days.

Once you got it back and everything was refitted the next problem would be the harness for the electric seats. Depending on what harness is already there you might need a new one, this is especially true if you have the memory function on one or both of the new seats.

So that is the answer to your question, if you have any questions just ask, if you do go ahead and need someone who can do the BeCM stuff for you then Im sure I can help find someone.

Lastly, when purchasing your 'new' BeCM, double check to make sure its a highline one, generally the later BeCM the better, that is to say, its better if it comes from a later year P38. It doesn't matter whether it comes from a petrol or diesel P38 as it can be re-programmed to work with either.

hi there i had manual cloth seats in my car and changed them for cream leather electric ones fiterd seats and arnes from seats to bcm but wont work. bcm dos have green plug c912 but been told that you need fuse 10 and 20 in the fuse box but mine as no prongs in 10 20 fuse slots so is there eny think i can do to solve this problam thanks mark

general consensus is if it is highline bcem it should support electric seats and be marked as highline-have you checked?

hi there my bcm is lowline is it hard to change from a L bcm to a H bcm and dos eny one no the cost of reprograming them to the car eny help or advise

The Becm changeover is quite straightfoward when you get your replacement, it's usually just "Plug & Play".
Obviously, the relevant harnesses and outstations, including memory door mirrors are required if you also want the door mirror memory function as well as the seats.

I have sent you a PM regarding the Becm

I have 2 1995 DSE's one electric leather one manual leather odd I thought but Going but what wills has said it sound's like someone paid the extra to have electric when new.

if you go to a scrappy and look for the p38's with the two tramlines/go faster stripes, that usually means they are highline becm. doesnt guarantee they are leccy seats tho so just go get the harness from behind the seats. its a bit tricky getting em out tho and make sure you only take the one from the leccy seat version cos of the plugs on there!!
