Hi -

I fear my gearbox on my '98 300Tdi 140k miles is getting ready to go. However I wanted to ask the clever folk on here!

There's no whining or grinding, but it's difficult to get into 3rd and 4th without a little shoving and stirring. It gets slightly better as it warms up but not great. Often by the time it gets into 3rd I've slowed down to go back to 2nd!

Is this an overly complicated fix? I assume its gear linkages....

Any hints would be hugely appreciate as always!

Cheers.

does lever spring back to 3rd 4th aligment positively when pulled pushed to either side if it doesnt remove consol and ruber gaiter and tin cover off box top and look at bias plate should have a tab holding the 2 springs apart ,can be a sign of needing rebuild if bias is okay depends on other symptoms

Aha - that sounds promising.
-It is almost like the gear lever doesn't re-centre itself, hence 3rd and 4th aren't quite where you expect them.

I'll check the bias plate.

Thanks a lot!
