What is the differences between the early and late styles for the rear mounted spare wheel swing away gate thingy? the mantecs style.

I am looking at the rear mounted swing away mounted spare wheel holder but I have a hybrid and I am unaware of the origin of some of the parts, this of course makes fitting things tricky.
