Afternoon everyone,

Anyone ever fitted a Mantec swing away on their Series rear safari door? The instructions don't give me the measurements to drill the door for the mounting plate. I suppose i could fit the actual carrier and see where it will fits with the door and measure from there?

Thanks

Rich

I have one (or very similar) on my S3 - my rear door had the standard fixed wheel carrier on it already and from what I remember some of those holes lined up with the holes in the new bracket and I then drilled the rest out. I have rear door off at the moment as I have a hood on with a drop down tailgate - I'll try to get a picture of it and some measurements tomorrow as the mounting plate can currently be clearly seen without the actual wheel and frame in the way. I've modified the tailgate to accept a fixed securing bracket and drop catch to make use of the wheel carrier in both hardtop and soft top formats.

Brillant, thank you.

I was toying with keeping the spare on the bulkhead but id rather have the internal space and it looks better.

This is the positioning of the plate and piston as on my rear door. Measurements are:
From top edge of plate to edge of window glass above is 113mm
From Right Hand edge of plate to Right Hand edge of door is 205mm.

The smaller plate below was on the door when I got the vehicle, not sure what it was for, maybe to protect door from trailer hitch as it has a fairly big old style height adjustable drawbar attached.. As far as I can remember I used some of the existing holes in the door from the fixed wheel mounting that was originally there and then drilled the rest. I suspect I probably tried to position it so that at east some of the bolts went through the ribbing on the rear of the door but without taking off the rear door card I cant tell for sure. Hope this helps. Cheers.....Ian

Thank you Ian, that really helps.

I also have the right rear tailgate mount in the way. Did you have the same problem? Think i just need to grind it off to make the bottom bracket fit.

Can't remember to be honest. I'll try to get a picture for you of how it sits just now with the drop down tailgate and soft top fitted We are a bit busy with turkey sales from the farm just now so might not be today.
Cheers.........Ian

Had chance to have a quick look and I obviously had to notch the bottom carrier bracket to fit around the lower door hinge - see the second photo. The top bracket has just enough clearance to miss the top antiluce catch but wouldn't allow it to actually be used. I simply remounted a new antiluce catch further down and remounted the corresponding ring lower on the tailgate frame to match. Hope this helps.

Thank you Ian for taking the time to reply in between being super busy. Thats perfect mate. My swing away has a slightly bigger rear bottom bracket which goes slightly further to the left so will have to grind away a small piece of the lower tailgate mount. (can always fabricate a new one if i ever change my mind).

Anyway, really useful and thank you once again. Have a great Christmas

Unless the design of these carriers have changed over the intervening years since I had one; bear in mind the rear door cannot be opened from the inside when the carrier is in the travel position.
In the event of an accident rear seat passengers will be unable to escape unaided.

Just a thought

The design allows the carrier to swing in conjunction with the rear door - if you look at my first picture of the demounted door there is a piston type arrangement in the fixing that slides along as the door opens while still keeping it attached. There are some designs that actually have a captive fixing at the end so do block the door - bit cheaper but what price safety.
