Hi so I took my Land Rover Freelander 2 in for its MOT I had a feeling it was going to fail I didn’t think it would be this bad, the damage is:

  • Rear Sub-frame corroded and seriously weakened
  • (5.3.3 (b) (i))
  • Nearside Front Lower Suspension arm ball joint excessively worn (5.3.4 (a) (0))
  • Nearside Front Lower Suspension arm ball joint dust cover no longer prevents the ingress of dirt (5.3.4 (b)
  • Nearside Front Anti-roll bar linkage ball joint dust cover no longer prevents the ingress of dirt (5.3.4 (b)
Has anyone had experience with these repairs and estimated costings?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, it’s a 2009 plate.

The Rear Sub-frame will be the big cost as it depends where it needs welding or if it’s too far gone it will need replacing, the other things I don’t think will cost much

I’ve not long done my rear subframe…
I went ‘new’, here. Good service, no issues at all;

You are looking at about £450 all in, that includes the rear suspension arms, which you may as well do also. I also replaced some of the bolts for genuine LR ones, including the SF mounting bolts. (In fact, I also replaced both rear driveshafts as preventative maintenance, so it’s all new underneath at the back).

You can save a lot if you do it yourself - you’ll need some decent jacks and stands. I’m no mechanic, just ‘diy’ level, but it’s quite doable if you are slow and methodical. You’ll can also take the time to service the Haldex and diff whilst out, so it’s quite a satisfying job actually.

You’ll need to have 4-wheel alignment when done, no matter who fixes it.

Front ball-joints again are doable yourself if you are able to.
