Long story short.. I got the main beam warning light working in my dash today, but I can't see it through the blue lens in the instrument panel. I watch carefully as I insert the bulb into the back of the panel and I can see it is still shining as it goes in. It's not going off as far as I can tell. Is that blue lens known to go dark over time (S2A, 50 years old)? My other dash lights are plenty visible. Seems very odd.

Interestingly, mine was out too. I removed the lmp holder with bulb and pressed it, it lit. The solder pad on the bulb had worn away making it intermittent.
Maybe yours is actually going out when pressed into the lens??

My glow lamp is useless, glow is the definition!!! Am going to try a 6v lamp as the volt drop on the dropper seems to be about 5v dropping to 4v.

My old bulb wasn't working for exactly the same reason, the solder pad on the bulb had work away. When I screwed a new one in it worked fine. I watch the light from it on the inside of the holder as I insert it as far as I can and I'm 99% sure it's not going out.

I'll have a look later when it's dark as Col says his isn't clear in daylight.

What do you mean by glow lamp andy?

Yak:p What's wrong with the barely glowing originals?

I'm sure mine glows red:eek:

The LEDs are not entirely my thing but if I go out tonight and still can't see the main beam one through the lens I might fit an LED bulb to that one. :D

Are your headlights that crap you can't tell the difference without seeing a little blue light coming on?:p Is your tell light in the same place as mine?

I don't like things that don't work. :D

No, my lamp is between my COLD choke light and another on my right hand instrument panel.

When I've wired up my headlights and driven the thing on the road I'll tell you! :)

I actually stopped drinking my beer for a moment there and thought "How has he got a photo of my dash!?" :D

Yeah. Looks like the jewel set would fit. Not sure I need to drop 50 on a new speedo though.. although I might find that's broke too when I drive the thing.

When the boy's in bed I'm off to the garage to see if it's visible in the dark. Don't need to see it in the day after all..

I’ve been out and It’s visible in the dark. That’ll do for me it’s working after all. I’ll bear the led bulbs and jewel sets in mind but until I’ve eveb driven the thing in daylight it’s a way down the list. Cheers guys.

Very good :D
Is the gear knob still held on with tape? :p

The guage has some tubes inside so the backlight of the speedometer does not shine through the indicator bulb these are easily damaged if the gauge has been dismantled , had two to pieces recently and the main beem has a short piece of soft white tubingh which had fouled on the other piece attached to casing. replaced the white tubing with some 6mm od nylon tubing.

On my diesel I have a glow plug lamp wired across the glow plug ballast resistor. It glows until the plugs warm and increase in resistance then it goes out. The plugs are in series at about 2V each. 5V across resistance when plugs cold. A 12V bulb hardly lights at all.
