Hi, can anyone advise if the s3 has a relay in the headlight circuit, I would expect one but the circuit diag doesn't show one installed? The problem I have is the mainbeam works from the stalk if using the flash, but if put in to mainbeam position when on dipped fails to illuminate the main beam and cuts out the dipped light as well.

Thanks

Probably an earth problem. Find where the earth wires are connected to the body (probably the front panel) and clean the connections.

No relay. I'd suspect the switch, they tend to be troublesome, especially the cheap ones.

Thanks Mike, Dave.

I susspected the stalk and was going to replace this, there only about £15 quid so reasonable. I'm happy with the earthing as other working circuits terminate at the same point. What I wanted to know without tracing all the wires if there is a relay. Being an eX Coastguard machine it had a lot of heavy duty wiring most of which had just been chopped. I have removed most of the stuff, some which I'll need to put back as the spare fuse panel will come in handy for accessories!! There seems to be loads of flasher units. The only way I can safely remove these are by tracing the wires. Its a little tedious though, hence my short cut for asking!!

the extra flasher units are most likely to be for be for flashing lights ect, no relays fitted for the head lights, and as the last man said 9out of 10 the stalk is the fault, this can be tested using a circuit tester, any wiring or electric work or tracing wires the bst tool is a tester, and as for earth wires these are a wll known problem on older vehicles they look good but you cant beat taking them off and cleaning them. and to be honest i find electrics on a series 3 very simple to work on and any wires which dont belong there i trace back and chop them off( better word remove), black wire is earth on most compnents on a landy.

Thanks BRNOZ,
I have been removing all surplus wiring and S3 Wiring is simple. Once I get through sorting out legitimate strands and those which are surplus it will be even easier. I have ordered another stalk from Island 4x4 which hopefully will turn up for the weekend. I'll also take another look at the earths although I'm sure its the switch.

Earths can be a constant battle on a Series motor, and should always be checked if you are having electrical problems, however as both main beams are out, the switch would seem more likely.

just been tinkering with mine, if you take the stalk off and see which contacts are supposed to touch when on dip or main beam then you can bend the copper tabs to suit.
the black earths from each side on mine join into connector near bonnet catch into black from loom cleaned all the bullets and connectors worked a treat on me new halogens

no relay normally

Thanks Steve,

Wish I knew that befor I ordered the new stalk that the contacts could be engineered back to make better contact. That will teach me to fiddle before just ordering parts. I guess I'm a mechanics dream in accepting the part is US without fully exploring all the possible adjustments first?

you could always keep old one as a spare, i had to modify mine as i think it got hot when i shorted lights, learning point is disconnect battery doh
