Firstly, I know that this has been a thread previously but I'm a bit stuck so any help would be appreciated. I have only had a discovery for 2 months and am not very good at fixing stuff etc so this is for suggestions about where to take the car next.

My m+s lights have been flashing intermittently and it feels like it is in limp mode (seems to be in 3rd gear, hard to pull away etc.

I took to local mechanic and he ran diagnostic and changed the battery. Still have the same issue, but his diagnostic wont read with the transmission. I took it somewhere else and they said they couldn't find the issue but they wouldn't really touch it as it is automatic.

My question is where do I take it now and what do I ask them to do? I'm concerned if I take it to an automatic specialist they will just want to replace transmission/gearbox for HUGE price which I cant rally afford. I have it booked into garage for Monday next week for them to check gearbox oil levels and filter to see if that makes a difference.
The 2 places so far haven't mentioned anything about the xyz switch which maybe could be an issue?

Any advice please guys?

Mine did it once, may have been battery related as it had gone flat due to the alternator failing. Only thing I did see was while ignition is on but engine off cycle the stick from 1 to P fairly vigorously several times. Mine cleared after that and never came back but as said could just have been the battery and it may be coincidental. Ideally get someone with a nanocom or similar to look and see what the xyz switch is reporting.

Nice one, thankyou for that, I will try the vigorous stick change to see if that has an impact.
How can I find out if somewhere has a nanocom?

Any LR specialist should be able to help and I’d imagine there are plenty in Norfolk with the amount I see driving about up there! They are a car where you really need someone that knows them. If you pick up the phone and they start saying specifics about the car you’ve got a good chance, a general garage will probably spend a fortune of your money trying to find what could end up being a really simple fault. I’m not heading up that way any time soon sadly otherwise I’d have gladly diverted with my nanocom.

Thanks for your help again. I'll see if there are any specialists. There was one only 3 miles away from me up until a year ago but now retired. Am I rightly advised to not take it to a land rover dealership though?

xyz switch is first port of call , a few on here have stripped the switch and repaired

A dealer may only be interested in newer stuff and charge accordingly. Depends on your luck, if they have people that know the D2 there it might be a good move but almost certainly not the cheapest.

its not the auto its just a separate position switch theres a series of contacts that are swiped by the lever,as you select gears etc

HAHA, good picture, I've just phoned the local LR specialist and it is going in next week. They said XYZ switch sounds likely but will check for a few other options first like sensor causing overheating etc. £55 for them to spend an hour trying to find what is wrong with it seems ok to me and hopefully they can sort it.

Did they fully charge the new battery before they fitted it, mine used to do that if I left it for a week or so. Local garage kept saying xyz switch anyway, new fully charged battery problem solved. Worth a try, them xyz switches ain't cheap.

M+S flashing lights and limp mode can be quite a difficult fault to trace especially if it is an intermittent fault, Rave lists about 17 causes so if you can speak to your specialist garage and see if they will clear all your fault codes and then take it back when the fault has occurred so that they can read current faults only and not historic ones.
 
Problem with these cars is the slightest drop in voltage on an ECU and they throw a hissy fit and report all sorts of crap. Mine reported a faulty XYZ switch, faulty TPS and god knows what else.

Thanks, yeah the first garage I took it to saw about 10 faults and changed battery and cleared faults. M+s still flashing tho. 2nd local garage saw 3 faults but didn’t really want to deal with it. LR specialist will take it in next Wed but think they will be able to diagnose it within an hour.
Interestingly the lights went off today and drove normally for most of the day then came back on again later today and back to limp mode.
Could it be something needing resetting now battery has been changed?
 
AHA! If it went back to normal then went back to abnormal, what were you doing exactly when that happened? Were you accelerating up a hill? (Of which there are not loads in Norfolk) or were you accelerating hard to overtake something?
And has it gone back to normal again once you stopped took the key out and then restarted?

Lights were off this morning and driving normally stayed off. When got to a roundabout and stopped they came on as I pulled away.
Tried again about an hour ago and lights were off from startup for about a minut then came on again and went limp mode for no apparent reason
