Hi

How lumpy should a disco be?? When you lift the clutch?? And also when accelerating, just unsure how it should sound, because the ones I have driven have both been the same, and the one I have now is also lumpy. Any advice is good. Also do you guys find that letting the clutch up slowly is good?, it isn’t a car and requires some skill in giving a good ride.

Please advise me of your own vehicle

wtf do you mean by lumpy????does the whole thing judder???does it jump up and down or is it the paint work that is lumpy??
 
lol, I mean when lifting the clutch how smooth should it be. its a little jerky on this one and if you lift to fast its quite a bump, could be something like engine mountings. Not sure thats why I asked. and no it dont jump up and down, the paint work aint lumpy, and the whole thing doesnt judder......Is it just a normal landy thing, or something else. Not a smooth transition coming up to the biting point.
 
first orf it will be a bit stiffer than yer normal road car clutch...and if you encounter any resistance on the way up to the biting point you could have problems.. try this simple test....... start engine...push down clutch.now find the point at which you can first engage a gear( by which i mean what is the least distance you need to push the pedal to get a gear with no crunching) having found that now slowly let the clutch pedal up to its highest point....how far did you have to release it to get the vehicle to start to crawl forward???? oh! and do this on a flat level bit of road..
 
Thanks for the reply, I tried that today and pushing down is stiffer than a car, but coming up no probs at all, and it will go into gear an inch down on the pedal, and will crawl half way on the pedal, good or bad ??
 
thats cos the spring on the clutch plates are stiffer.... are you saying that you can depress the pedal by one inch and it will go into gear? then if you release it by 1/2 inch it will crawl forward????
 
Yeah you can depress down quite low to get her into gear, and by releasing slowly you can make it bite within half to 3/4 of an inch from the original push down point and by releasing slowly the gear change is really smooth, but by lifting the pedal like a car would, makes a little lump in the front. I guess the pedal is down half way in doing this, but tomorrow I will double check it. This is one of the best vehicles I have ever driven, just not sure if its me or there maybe a prob........ Also just confirm with me please, normal driving is with the smaller gear stick in "H" There is also a slight whine when its cold like a thrust bearing noise, but when warm goes away, only when starting off in first.
 
if you have to push down a long way it could be a worn plate but this is usually accompanied by have to release it quite a lot to get it to move which you say your not doing.give it a week you'll get used to it and it should be in two wheel drive ,high ratio for normal driving

Ok thanks for that, I am getting it smoother and I am sure its me being a numbnuts cause I am a nooooooooob, and its just different to car. Thanks very much for your time and advice........
 
Ok played with the gears and pedals today and took it real smooth, and no lumpy sound. I guess its me being a ejit and not the vehicle. But I still noticed a little lump when lifting the foot off the accelerator and back on to it, might just be the engine mounts or thats the way it is, think I will just see how it goes.

However I do have one slight other problem, I think the vehicle is in H for normal driving, but its never been used for four wheel drive and the little gear lever is as stiff as a bishops. From what I have read on here WD40 down the little gear lever, like a can full???? I dont want to use 4WD, but would like to know that everything works well and it would be handy sometime to use it I am sure... Fuel consumption isnt too good, 25quid and like 100 miles, thats why I am curious about the 4WD thing...........
 
ok ta for that will give it ago tom morn, I dont think its ever been into 4wd. Spent all day cleanin and checkin the body over, and finding bits of rust, got some waxoil and going to power wash it then waxoil all the stuff underneath and the engine bay...
 
Well I have sprayed WD40 into the little diff lever, and after a little force I am glad to say after three years, the Landy now goes into 4WD, I am so happy it works, over the moon with whole thing, totally amazing vehicle wish I had bought one sooner. Its still strange though whilst in Lock 4wd not a sound from the clutch or gear box at all, only when in H for normal, but I can live with it......... Thanks for all the advice on this site, makes a big difference with someone to assist on silly little problems. Going to drive to work tom morn in 4wd, get the gears moving again. don't know much about them there new fangled discos but if you got lock 4wd i've heard its not good for them to be driven on the road like that. i'm sure if this is true someone that knows more about them will tell you. to be on the safe side don't do it until you find out one way or tuther
