Hi folks,

the big day finally came, the elusive Fairey overdrive arrived! Fully refurbished at that! I fully managed to forget about the fact that for the price of the overdrive I could have gotten fully rebuilt R380 and have it installed. So, call me happy! :)

Regarding installation, I managed to find a manual for the Series one, but not for the Range Rover... Which sucks, especially since I have to build parts of the connection shafts and stuff myself. Probably not such a big deal, the bit and pieces directly linking to the overdrive are there, but with a manual quite difficult. So if anyone has the correct manual, or knows someone who has, that would be really cool!

If not, and even with a manual it would be cool, I am all ears regarding the installation process! If memory serves well, there is the risk of a gear shaft (3rd gear?) moving forward...

Anyways, the initial plan to have it installed before the upcoming Tunisia trip fell through due all the missing bits. And the fact that the transmission tunnel is welded in...

So, overdrive or not, a pretty tall order for parts is coming up: new diff (Detroit Truetrek), new coil springs for the rear, new shocks for the rear, some switches and various other bits that need replacement, new cam shaft and push rods, new timing gear, new water pump (while the mechanic is at it he can replace everything in one go) and maybe a new set of carpets for the interior (the home made stuff suffered quite bit already in the last two years).

Stay safe everyone!

Greetings!

Thanks guys! Just ordered it! It RHD, but the mechanics seem simple enough to mirror them to LHD. The tunnel appears to be spot welded at the rear between the B columns. Hopefully it's as easy as drilling the spot welds out and use some threaded rivets to put it back in... Considering the speed I'm working on all those side projects that'll be a winter 2022/23 project so...

If I remember correctly there is a thrust washer that fits on the gearbox out put shaft that must be in place when you offer up the overdrive unit. Make sure it hasn't stuck to the back plate you have to take off.;)

Cant help you with instructions....

But I noticed this bit the "elusive Fairey overdrive" how elusive? I have one on an lt95....if its elusive it must be worth a fortune :)

Can I ask what yours cost?

I've seen them advertised for about £800  I bought a complete Classic many years ago with a knackered diesel engine, the guy thought I was daft when I gave him £300 ,he didn't realise it had the overdrive.:D:D

Mine is completely refurbished (as refurbished as they go with all those obsolete parts in them, same for LT95s by the way) and went for 900 pounds. As I said, once it's installed, I could have easily swapped a completely rebuilt LT77 / R380 in it... Well, stupid me has something about keeping her original... I'm still lying to myself a Fairey Overdrive will increase her value, you know. Not that it actually matters, I'll never sell her anyway...
