so going through the motions my lt77 crunches slighty into 4th ( I can live with that ) but when you put it into 5th it just chucks it straight back out again even if you hold it ther it crunches n throws it back to neural

Am I right in thinking it’s definatly a strip down job ?

Second question if I can’t find a reasonably priced second hand unit who is best priced for full rebuild?

Cheers in advance

I would recommend ashcrofts for a rebuild they have done both my gearbox and trasnferbox, and both were done in a weeks turn around time so the vehicle was not off he road for long.

I also had a slight issue with the transferbox clicking as you took up drive, contacted them about it and they said said they knew what it was, it would not cause any problems to continue driving it, and to return it to them to have it rectified. I got around to taking it out about 6 months later, and they sent a courier to collect it and returned it in less than a week with no more clicking.

Whereever you go you need to make sure that the are using quality parts and bearing, not the cheapest Chinese ones going. I had a no-name rebuilt gearbox fitted that lasted about 30k before the bearings failed in it. (annoyingly about 6 moths outside the 12month warranty period.)

Sounds like you probably sheared 5th gear off the end of the lay shaft. My first LT77 did this and my second one just disintegrated - it's been lying in the corner of the garage now for 9 years! If you can afford it, get the R380 short-shaft from Ashcrofts. Interestingly my R380 short will be up for sale soon as I am going to move the engine etc. and fit an R380 from a Defender but that won't happen soon unless someone has a good defender R380 for me!
