Awsworth 4x4 .. possibly Foremost 4x4 can't remember the name did a great job for us on our old S3 when we lived there. They're all Landrover enthusiasts and have a few between them in various states of off-roadability and repair ... ;)

Sorry, been back in Doncaster for 6/7 years or so ... If you leave Nottingham on A610 heading for Eastwood, off at the Ikea junction and head left into Awsworth, left at the mini-roundabout, up the hill they are at the top of the hill on the left, just as the road bears right. Their workshop is, or was, in the industrial units behind the new supermarket in Ilkeston. It's a possibility that they no longer trade ...

I never needed contact details as I 'knew' them from living close by, and from local clubs and recommendations ...

Sorry I can't be more vague ... ;)

i can recommend tonks 4x4 at huthwaite (near sutton in ashfield) i have had my fender there a few times and as he specialises in landys he knows his stuff and reasonably priced to

just be carefull of repairs tonks do ! make sure you are paying for ALL you are being invoced for.
i bought a 90 defender that had every thing that needed doing done by tonks, i have recipts for hundreds of pounds of work supposedly done but there were about 6 things billed for that had NOT been touched.
the one i was most shocked at was the bill for a new front to rear brake line replacment which had NOT been done !

i have heard a lot of bad reports about this type of thing from tonks 4x4 and i have also found his prices to be some what expensive compared to other places locally and a lot of the time when you go in for parts they are not in stock.

what is it you are wanting doing ?

what is it you are wanting doing ?

Just a place to get service stuff done (I have no garage or yard, or much ability...), a place to get parts etc...

Following on from this - where to get a 110 waxoyled around here... at a sensible price

when i first got my disco i was ringing around for prices for the cam belt, when i phoned foremost 4x4 i thought he was talking a right load of bollix, he was telling me 'this needs replacing that needs doing, you ought to get that done' and gave me a quote of 800 quid without even looking at the disco:eek:

i went to crosshill garage in loscoe and got it done for 170 quid with all parts, they don't specialise in landy's but most of the mechanics have landy's and are into off roading and nkow there stuff

Are they stilll going then?

We took a mates new (to him) Defender in. Bit of a wreck he had no clue, for them to appraise what it needed to pass the imminent MOT. They gave him a comprehensive, typewritten list of everything that could possibly fail, in order of necessity. When i checked it and checked the vehicle they looked spot on. Cost? Nothing, they just asked that they MOT it. When he'd done the work he took it in for MOT, they passed it (different mechanic than the one who'd done the list) and gave him an advisory for the rest of the items, weren't many but can't recall what they were. They also gave him two sachets of one-shot grease as the swivels were weeping very slightly!

They also correctly diagnosed a fault on my series weber carb and fixed it 'with bits from an old one out the back' for a tenner ... two hours work ... ;)

Trouble is I'd guess that any workshop with more than one mechanic can have different tales told about it. A bad day from a mech just might mean feckall gets done, and you get ripped off a tad, but the next day when he isn't hungover you might get absolutely spiffing service!

You could therefore be looking for a while ... my suggestion would be to book it in at the closest to you but ask that you can watch as they do it, you might be lucky!

OK, here's a (possibly daft) idea...

Is there anyone with a big garage or yard, who has the ability (or knows someone who does), who could do a 'Service School' for Land Rovers.

Get a 'volunteer vehicle' (owners buys service kit & oils etc) and the 'pupils' can learn how to do the job, meet other LR owners etc.

Everyone can put a tenner in or whatever, get the bacon cobs & tea on...

Good day all round + people like me (who don't know enough about the whys & wherefores of servicing etc) can learn something :D

Like I say, just an idea...

Dave,

Awsworth 4x4 (Foremost 4x4) has bin shut for a while now, you could however try Jim at Formost 4x4 on 0115 944 2961, His place is just round the back of Tescos in Ilkeston.

Either that or get Axletwister to do it :)

Rich.

Couldn't remember his name or the supermaket, but that's the one we knew and would recommend. ;)
